Keith's singing vs Mick J's guitar playing

Which do you find more frivolous/unnecessary: Keith's singing on a song or two per album or Mick Jagger's guitar playing?

I don't know why Keith needs to sing a tune or two per LP. I have no idea why he does. On HAPPY it works but does he really need to sing a song or two on EVERY LP?

But Mick J playing the guitar. WTF. Why? The Stones were never a three-guitar band like Lynryd Skynyrd. Does Mick J just play slide guitar? Or is Mick J compensating for a drugged-out Keith? Or does he think a Ron Wood + Mick J = the guitar great Mick Taylor?

It's not the Stones without Keith's vocal and guitar contributions...
Even Michael knows that or this solo tour you're watching unfold wouldn't have Keith...

I suspect the real reason Jagger play guitar a bit onstage is that it provides a break from having to run and leap around for a couple of numbers, even if they're rockers.

Yep, It's Stage fright. They're very shy and sensitive about their music.

Keith's voice is getting better with age, it gets lower and deeper..while Mick is getting more and more nasal.

I Love Keith's singin - I wish he would sing more and more..and more ballads.

Mick is mediocre guitarist, not needed..and if they wanna do three guitar attacks, they could use Taylor..

What in the world are you talking about? Why do you think that because they CAN do it, they SHOULD do it?

Actually I think since about 1980 Keith's vocal tracks have been some of the strongest songs on the albums (Slipping away, Sleep Tonight, How can I stop? etc) Take those off and you'd lose a hell of a lot from the albums and most just wouldn't suit Mick's voice so well. As for Mick playing guitar I guess he just likes to be part of the band in terms of playing, he's been doing this a long time (since 78 I think) so it's nothing to do with anything that's happened lately I'd say.

Last tour, Mick's singing was better than Keith's lazy style of playing...this tour, it's the other way around. Mick sounds like he's crying the lyrics instead of singing.

No, man, you got me all wrong. I don't do cruel acts like that, especially to children.

After having several of my own sand castles kicked in as a child, I began to make a small pile of rocks and build my sand castles over that. I was a vengeful little tyke. >grinning smiley<

Mick's guitar playing live is not very good. Sometimes he plays half a song and I've never really heard him live.

if a live guitar can't be heard, can it be not very good?

This is one of the great philosophical questions, pondered by the great minds of our time.

Dammit, have we been fooled all these years. Is Charlie the real multi-instrumentalist and instrument specialist in the band? And here teaching Ronnie the secrets of ukulele... "Listen, boy, you put your hand here and..."

Neither. I mean, sometimes, but rarely is it frivolous. I was initially annoyed when he played live on "sad sad sad", but it really does fill out the sound to make it more like the studio version, which is what they were aiming for. Same with "I Go Wild". Whatever you think of the song, that was a great ending live, and Mick's guitar is as loud as the others, three slashing geetars. Saint of Me opens w/acoustic guitar on the album, so it makes sense that he'd play it live, cuz keef and ronnie are holding electrics, and you probably don't want Blondie playing the intro. The only one I can think of where it was pointless was on Waiting on a Friend live in '81.

Are Keith vocals "necessary"? Not technically, but that doesn't make them frivolous. It's usually a nice break from the Jagger show, both live and on the records. I love his voice. Usually. It's definitely gotten better, as has his technique over the years. I went with friends to the Babylon show in '98, Keith was doing "All About You" then. My friend's wife, who had heard Keith talk but never seen him perform, said, "Oh my God, he's really good!" Hence, not frivolous, case not proven, court adjourned. smiling smiley

I'm usually in Keiths camp. But I feel that Keith's singing started off as a sort of novelty to play on his carefree outlaw image. A lot of his songs like Happy, Coming down again, Before they make me run are writin by him about him. I'm not taking anything away from those numbers, I happen to like them. But the point here is that no way Keith could have made it on his own on a Stones type level of success. Its still for the most part Micks band.

As for Mick, I hat the sight of him wearing guitar, and I agree with the above its probably more about him getting a rest while performing.
