yeah, but not sure they can pull it off like they did in '81...maybe with enough rehearsing, though....

Let's start from the premise that the Stones essentially wrote the playbook for big venue rock concert openers. When you've got previous openers like Jumpin' Jack Flash ('69-71 and '99), Brown Sugar ('72-73, '02-03), Start Me Up ('89-90, '02-07), and Satisfaction ('97-98) on your resume, you've set the bar about as high as you can. Which is not to say that Honky Tonk Women ('75-76), Let It Rock ('78-79), Under My Thumb ('81-82), and Not Fade Away ('94-95) were exactly chopped liver.

However, because they're playing a set list of primarily the same old songs, they've got to make that set appear fresh by switching up the order of presentation. Recycling a previous opener would show a lack of imagination. Imagine the howling if they came back after five years off with only two new songs and then opened the shows with something they've used hundreds of times before in that spot.

They're way beyond Plan B at this point; at the 50-year mark, they're at about Plan G when it comes to openers. Forget about anything released after Tattoo You (You Got Me Rocking and Rough Justice shouldn't be in the set list, let alone used as openers).

The opener has got to be an old uptempo hit under four minutes that either Keef or Charlie kicks off. Assuming that previously used openers are out of consideration, that leaves you with Get Off of My Cloud almost by default. Having said all that, it's a pretty good opener, but not in a league with the best previous Stones openers.

Get Off My Cloud is a superb opener.Although the Stones didn't open the show with GOMC on the ABB tour I remember walking across the bridge to PNC park in Pittsburg and the Stones were playing it during their soundcheck and it sent chills up and down my whole body. Great, Great song. Excellent choice!

No..........I compare it with '75/'76 version, it doesn't compare so why bother?

If they have to have Sympathy in the set, start with that...............

would it be ok if they started with the 69 version of sympathy? if not, maybe the 75 version?

then maybe straight into the 72 version of bye bye johnnny.

then it's onto the 78 version of whip comes down.

best tour ever....

YGMR would make a good opener.

They surprised me for sure opening with it on the Bigger Bang tour. I think it worked pretty well. That or any "warhorse" works. Gets the casual fan pumped up and gets it out of the way for the jaded IORRian. Everybody's happy.

They way they play GOOMC now it is underwhelming, to say the least. Luckily as the show progresses you can almost hear that collective sigh of relief that the Stones are not finally washed up.

Still think Honky Tonk Women is the best opener. TOTAs style!

I'm so out of it that I actually think bands should play what they want to play.

However, seems to me it would be smart if the Stones opened their shows with a medley of their "warhorses." Would get the audience rocking.

THEN three songs with Mick Taylor.

A couple of Keith's "tunes".

Then a surprise appearance from Stevie Wonder doing two or three songs.

"Miss You" as one of the encores. (Bathroom break for the few who don't wanna hear it again.) Another encore..."Satisfaction" with Mick Taylor involved.

I'm just full of ideas today.

Go ahead Stones Tod, rip into my humble suggestions!

i'm quite contented with this. but then i'm always pleased and contented with whatever the rolling stones decide to regale us.

I'd go along with Stonerule's suggestions apart from that we got to have it black in white that the "keith tunes" won't be Happy, Before They Make Me...., The Worst.....or any other "Keith rocker" that's simply not rocking at all. A ballad or two would be OK.

Thoughts on opening song

I am curious about what others think of opening this tour with Get Off of My Cloud. I very much like their current live version of the song but I just don't like it as an opening. It doesn't seem to follow the great drum intro they're doing as well as maybe SFM, JJF etc. would. I feel like they should start with a stronger sounding opening.

You Got Me Rocking was a good opener, but Under My Thumb is second only to JJF...

I like it as opener, especially for the 50th. It makes a nice bookend with Satisfaction.
