Yes, they only had that kind of stage setup in 89/90.

I'm guessing this was the second show (July 26) that you all are referring to? Guess they would have cancelled the second show if it were the first that only brought in 6,000 fans.

I attended both shows, about 12.000 people on the first night and 6000 on the second night. The promoter made a big mistake in booking end of July Flaminio stadium (second Rome football field) when all people in Rome are heading for the holidays. He had to pay the Stones in full, regardless of how many people attended the show.Went bankrupt right after.

It is also true that the Stones are not at all that popular here in Italy.

Stones are the greatest rock'n roll band EVERYWHERE, also in Italy

But ain't that sad that even being the greatest won't make them more popular in Italy?

Well, there were more than 80.000 in Milan in 2003!

But they didn't play at all in Italy in their 1995 European Tour, or do I remember it wrong?

But the Spanish love them! (Italy always been more Beatles oriented, I've heard..smile)

They planned to play San Siro in 95. Not sure why the show never happened. Trouble with the local promotor maybe?

The official excuse was that Jagger had some problems with his voice (since other dates were cancelled for the same reason, I believe this was the truth).
It was also said that ticket sales were doing bad, and that was the true reason why the concert which in the first place was only posponed was then cancelled.

That was in 98. In 95, the show was never officially announced.

So the Milan show 2003 was the first Stones concert in Italy for 13 years??!! So there were lots of fresh minds 'never seen the legend before'. Considering also that not many catched them '90, so it was almost first time in 21 years... about the time to make a big crowd with that name and fame in the land with population of some 40 millions...

erikjjf:

you are right, that was 98. But if I can remember well even if in 1995 there was not an "official" date, the story was much the same as in 1998.

One of the old issues of IORR from 95 had San Siro listed as a rumoured date. No tickets were sold.
In 98, the cancellation came on the day of the show. Bilbao, which would have been the following show, was also cancelled.

jacapo, that's a good one! Perhaps Franco wasn't the biggest Stones fan...

By the way, when was the first Spanish show? During the World Cup 82? (I suppose the Italians will not remember those games....)

They played a show in Barcelona in 76.

The Stones didn't do any gig in Spain while Franco was still alive. The first show, as erikjjf said was in Barcelona 76 (Franco had died in 75). And then they came back for two shows in Madrid back in 82.

Spain wasn't too much of a Stones country until the "modern tours". The Beatles were much more followed. I suppose that the Beatles were much more followed than the Stones in the latin countries (Spain, Italy, don't know France).

Yes, but make sure it will take place in Milano again because that's up in the north and gives thousands of fans from other European countries around (France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany...) to go there as well and fill the stadium.

They also had problems getting permission for shows in Italy in 1982.

Even though they eventually did play 3 stadium shows (Turin 11 & 12 July, Naples 15th July) all of which sold well (about 220,000 tickets) they had to reschedule shows from the original locations due to problems getting permission from the local authorities who still seemed to view the Stones as some kind of revolutionaries or something

My tour t-shirt from '82 listed shows in Rome, Florence and Milan, which never took place.

If I remember correctly, the mayor of Milan was Gianni Rivera, the former Milan & Italy footballer, who was strongly opposed to any Stones shows taking place at the San Siro

Gazza:

as far as I can remember (but I was only 14 in 1982) the stones were never seen as a public threat or something here in Italy. It is true that in 1990 Rivera and some other deputees filed a petition with the parliament asking that the stones and other bands who somehow "celebrated" the use of drugs (Lou Reed also had problems) were not allowed to play concerts in Italy because of their bad influence on the youth ...
Rivera was one of Milan's alltime best footbal players and still is a myth for fans. After retiring from Milan, he started a career in politics, and, although he was absolutely not aligned on my positions, I even grew to respect his point of view. But on this particular issue he made quite a fool of himself. His petition of course never had any consequences in real life.

The only serius problems here with all concerts in stadiums was how to preserve the grass of the field (why can't we grow a decent grass in Milan is a big mistery)

thanks for clarifying - I wasnt sure of the exact reason for shows being banned but I knew it was something to do with their perceived 'negative' influence!

I wouldnt worry about growing grass properly. Milan seem to be doing OK despite it!

and yeah, "Golden Boy" Rivera was quite a player!

Re: Rome 1990

The San Siro grass had always problems since 1990, with the construction of the 3° ring and the roof, the sun shines the grass very little, and Milano it's not a city famous for his sunshine.
So AC Milan and Inter society are not happy to see 20.000 people on the grass.
Then people who live around the stadium for every concerts (vasco rossi, stones in 2003, springsteen...) fight a RIDICULE war against the city municipality, causue they say that music is too hight, they can't sleep, when every sundays 80.000 people scream for AC Milan....

They should have done re-shooting of Rock&Roll Circus in Colosseum as they planned. But of course, Italians were against that, even though the Stones had made such a beuatiful Italian version of "As Tears Go By" two years earlier..

(Gazza - your "Rolling Stones" message board has gone quite..hmm.. obscure since the jewish guy left...)
