Re: 200 Greatest Guitar solos

It's always boring when reviewers mix up a good solo with a solo on a well-known song.

Exemplified by Santana; his songs in this list are in there solely because the songs are well-known, not because they are his best leads. If they had selected songs from f.i. Santana III there are solos of remarkably higher quality.

This points to the conclusion: It is impossible to rank and be just at the same time - nobody has the knowledge needed.

BTW, Neil Young and Pink Floyd are so overrepresented on this list that I'm laughing my¤#!#%&/ off smiling smiley

Where is the best rock'n'roll slide solo of all time (All Down The Line)?

I really can't take such lists seriously. I mean, what's the criteria for deciding what's good and what's not? Ask 10 people the same question and you'll get 10 different answers. The question should be phrased, more often than not, "What's your favorite..." not "what's the best..." My tuppence anyroad.

These plebs obviously never listened to Taylor carving it up on "Love in vain" from Ya yas.
Safe to say they never listened to CYHMK either.
Superb delivery and dare I say it - vibrato.

Would have thought McCartney's solo on "Taxman" would have been worth an honourable mention too.

The Tea Party's solo on "Winter solstice" kicks butt also.

And my cutting up of the axe on my first single "I once loved a beer".
Definately worth a mention.

kyle m

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

It's not my list.
I don't agree with it at all.

If I never hear Stairway to Heaven again it will be too soon. The fact that the guitar solo from the song "Loui Loui" by the Kingsmen is absent, makes this list suspect. One of the best early songs of Rock and Roll with a guitar solo poduced by a cheap fender amp turned up all the way. More notes doesn't always mean more feeling.

Most lists are rubbish. Only the lists you make yourself is good (if you care for lists).

But in all those lists The Stones are nearly always in the lower regions.
That's why I posted it.

What's there to worry about? If the list was "200 Best Rhythm Guitarist" and Keith was at 138...then we'd have something to protest about.

One of the best produced solos on a mainstream single release you'll ever hear is the soaring guitar on Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' (played by Hugh Burns). The perfect counter to that saxophone.

Any decent such list ought to have at least 15-17 of Samu Bencsik (1952-1987) solos on it [cgi.ebay.com]

There are many great guitar solos around. But it's impossible
to even define what's the benchmark for comparison.

I like solos which surprise me, attack me, mystify me and are fuelled
by feeling rather than perfection. So it's exit Steve Hunter, Dick
Wagner etc. (mere noodling) and enter guys like Jeff Beck, Hendrix,
Peter Green etc.

I think, risk taking is a key for a good solo (at least in my
understanding, many people would disagree, I'm sure).

So to make my contribution: I'd name Jeff Beck's solo in Goodbye Pork
Pie Hat. Tasty, playful and seducing with delicious sounds.

Sounds like real good sex to me.

those lists are made exactly for that purpose: that readers start to debate and discus about what is ranked too high, wehat is missing, etc. i most often disagree with those lists, but still its fun to get into a fuss about it and start hating the author...
