I just remembered "Hound Dog " covered by The Stones in Memphis 1978 on a boot,

I think the thing about Elvis was people felt a personel connection to him that isn't felt to the other artists. I don't mean that people can feel a meaning in his songs, but that they feel a connection to the person of Elvis.
I had a great aunt who liked Elvis because he was good to his mother. She didn't care about his drugs or womanizing. Also, like Elvis, she was from the US South. I knew a lady who actually met Elvis when she was young at a supermarket in the mid 1950's.He was new and promoting one of his singles and so he went to these little towns and promoted himself and his music.
On that point I think that's something else more people can relate to, especially in the US. Elvis grew up dirt poor and made it big. He somehow never lost his southern roots. It's easier as an American to see Elvis' poor upbringing than say John Lennon's for example.
Just some thoughts.

Yes, the middle-aged ladies were a major part of his audience in the 70's.
They worshiped him!

Hope you weren't part of those gossipy ladies who gathered in the restroom to talk about him..."AH love that boy!...He was so good to his mama....If I can get him to touch my hand, I don't know what I'll do!" ETC. ETC.

What makes Elvis bigger than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones?

He's the first one mentioned in the "No Elvis, Beatles, or Rolling Stones!" line in the Clash song, "1977."

Well, he was King. The Beatles and the Stones didn't claim to be royalty.

While John may have declared The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, his reverence for Yoko's talent may actually disqualify him as a reliable barometer of such things.

What made Elvis bigger? His appetite. See pics of him 1976-1977.

He was cool for sure.

But when he started to wear silly capes and became fat he was more than a Parody of hisself agree ???

His back up band in the 70s was absolutely killer. Tight as a all hell every night.
His voice went through periods of being great and being terrible (compared to what it used to be) but his band was always on in those 70s years.

He's bigger because the cultural change he (and Sam) created is the only reason the Stones or the Beatles could have ever existed. If Elvis doesn't happen the music that inspired both of them probably never gets heard by them in the first place. Not to mention the inspiration he gave them through his own music and career.

The majority of us only know a post-Elvis world. Like a kid now trying to understand the world without television.

They wouldn't show this guy from the waist up on TV! THAT'S the kind of world they were living in before him.

Bigger game changer than anyone in the business.

Which Stonessongs you think Elvis & the TCB-band could have pulled off neatly ( = honourable to the original & acceptable to us, Stonesfans), you reckon?!
Not very much qualify, I guess.
Although he sure would have given a certain 'ring' to either of them.

My money is on "I got the Blues". Would have loved to hear an Elvis-rendition of that one.

Elvis would have absolutely stunned with Shine A Light or Let It Loose. But he prolly would've enjoyed doing Hangfire or Memory Motel more...

...Hell YEAH!! Shine a Light... Let it Loose... Hang Fire... !! Oh, my... All three would be blindingly good.

Come to think of it: Elvis really would make a personal gem out of évery Stonessong. Make that: every song - period. cool smiley
Partly, and not in the least, thanx to that fantastic TCB-band.

P.S.: I believe he didn't care much for the Stones - thought very little of them;
partly because of the atitude (c.q. what the 'stood for' in the eyes of the public...), I think I read somewhere.
But why did he never tried a song of them? Is that documented? Anybody knows?

That you were a middle aged woman in the 70's? Would that make you like, female and 85 right about now?

So by that logic--based on duration-- if you started before them, then you are bigger than the Stones?

so....

"Tony Bennett is bigger than the Stones who are bigger than Elvis and the Beatles"

And by that logic, as long as you play LIVE once a decade or so, you're good.

I'm just glad Chuck Berry is the undisputed KING.

Their updated moniker says it best..

"THE GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN."

Keywords: BAND
: GREATEST

My cousin and aunt were huge Elvis fans, seeing him many times throughout the '70s. My cousin, now 65, also saw The Beatles...twice!

Another cousin saw the Stones at the Swing Auditorium in '64, then The Beatles a couple of months later.

I never understood what is so great about him. Highly overrated. I do like the late fat 70s Vegas Elvis, but more for the tragic aspect.

He was overated, laughing version of "Are you lonesome tonight" JESUS.... All he did was "In the Ghetto" There are countless American artists I would place ahead of Elvis

Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry
BB King
Bo Diddely
Muddy Waters
Bob Dylan

When Keith saw Mick at Dartford Station, London with records under his arm
Elvis was NOT one of them

The sheer amount of money Elvis has made every year since he left this Earth is staggering.
