anyone noticed the similarity between Hendrix version of Watchtower (68) and Gimme Shelter (69)? Same descending chords C# B A
Coincidence?

Are you sure? We play Shelter in B and Watchtower in Am.

But it's still the same kind of chord structure, Gimme Shelter could easily be played Am - G - F.

I do not hear any similarity at all. Melody line and rhythm are completely different.

In any case there must be at least 1 million songs based on that same chord progression.

C

Totally different rhythm. Under My Thumb and One Hit (To The Body) also have the same chord pattern, without sounding the same.

Well fairly sure. Dylan is in Am but Hendrix is C#m as far as I can work out. And the album version of shelter is C#m

Really? It's not I/IV/V after all. Name five then.

Sure melody etc is different. But descending run is similar is all I'm saying. Just curious. Actually thinking about it the same run turns up at the end of stairway to heaven-so there you go

As already stated above, after all it is such a common chords progression. The beauty of Gimme Shelter although is that it has such a minor-ish flavour structured around major chords in such a way that it makes you think thaty there must be a minor chord but it is not the case!

Is it such a common chord structure? We have watchtower, GS and the end of stairway to heaven-any others?

no the two songs really aren't played the same

watchtower has such adifferent set of lyrics

it would be disorienting to attempt the chords of one with the lyrics of another..

but interesting in an awkward kind of way maybe

yes I'll give you "Under My Thumb". That predates Watchtower and kinda blows the theory then. Still I cant help thinking there is some kind of subliminal connection.
