Garage rock is a raw form of rock and roll..

Thats how I define it...also grungebands like early Dinosaur Jr and Nirvana could be named garage-rock...

One of the best "i just discovered pot" songs, produced by Dale Hawkins.

And a great "the man is getting me down" song, later covered by the Reigning Sound

Some may find disagreement over how "garage rock" is to be defined. This clip of 60s home movies may help....

Neil Young & Crazy Horse billed themselves as the 3rd Best Garage Band in the World for their 1986 Tour.

He had lawnmowers, rakes, large mechanical roaches, gas cans, ladders, etc. on the stage & even played a few tunes from Trans.

The Knickerbockers' Lies [#20 U.S. in 1966] was also included on the first Nuggets compilation [compiled by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman and The Patti Smith Group's Lenny Kaye, who coined one of the first uses of the term 'punk rock' in the album's liner notes].

I don't recall that song, but The Merry Go Round were actually TWO-hit wonders here in L.A.

Songwriter-vocalist Emitt Rhoades early 70's solo albums--in which he plays all the instruments--sound like he's channeling Paul's "McCartney" album.

60's Garage Beat

Hey Kurt, thanks for the link! Not my blog, but it sure has the basics covered. There's something timeless about the vintage garage rock sound. Whenever you give it a listen, no matter how long it's been, it always sounds fresh and inspiring, not to mention exciting--which must be the reason the classic sound and approach of that original mid-60s wave of garage rock keeps getting revived again and again down through the decades.

So yeah, garage rock is that great 2 year period between r'n'b and psychedelia - roughly late 64 until late 66. In the UK, garage rock didn't really exist and the r'n'b bands developed a unique sound called freak beat that incorparated the first flourishes of psychedelia. Good examples are The Pretty Things sound on their second album Get The Picture.

This promo includes one of the albums killer cuts Can't Stand The Pain. You can really hear a bit of trippiness coming through.

Here's another great one from a Birmingham band called The Craig from 1966. It's called I Must Be Mad and it's considered one of the first psychedelic UK singles.

The band's drummer was Carl Palmer, later of ELP.

Oh Those Eyes was the first single in 1965 by The Vagrants, from Long Island, New York, USA. Lead guitarist Leslie West would later play in the group Mountain ["Mississippi Queen"]. The clip below features footage from the film Disk-O-Tek Holiday.
