Ya Ya's album cover-and the Dylan connection
Posted by: ozziestone ()
Date: March 9, 2013 13:52

Ever wondered about that donkey (or mule) on the cover of Ya Ya's? Me neither really but I am reading David Dalton's (very good) bio of Dylan at the mo and was mildly intrigued when he pointed out the connection between the album cover and Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" in particular the line from the song "jewels and binoculars hang from the head of a mule". So of course I drag out the album and sure enough the binocs are there as well as what might be jewels. Actually they look more like beads to me but the cover is a bit faded.

So that would make the Ya-Yas cover their first Dylan cover, 25 years ahead of their butchering Like a Rolling Stone!

On a related note, yesterday I saw possibly the greatest bumper sticker ever: I BRAKE JUST LIKE A LITTLE GIRL

According to Marianne Faithfull, the gang was listening to Blonde On Blonde when the cops showed up at Redlands...

Interesting stuff, I'd never picked up on the connection.

Another Ya-Ya's thing, Charlie watts is wearing his t-shirt with a pair of breasts on them. The same one that he wore on Top of the Pops for Honky Tonk Woman and Gimme Shelter.

I have heard the cover being influenced by Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" a dozen times but have never have heard exactly what that influence is. I am glad someone has finally explained it to me.

Thanks, ozziestone. winking smiley

Right on!!! Do you think the Stones will also be appearing? If so, it would be cool for Bill Wyman to show up too.
