Believe it or not, album sales are making a comeback in the US

18 months ago you could have gotten a top ten album with weekly sales of
just 10,000 units (like tom waits did). Now it takes 30,000.

18 months ago, Grrrr would have been a top ten album, instead of only making
it to #26

kids have finally figured out that it makes more sense to download katy perry's
entire album for 10 bucks instead of downloading 5 of her singles for about the
same amount

18 months ago there was the real possibility that artists would no longer make
albums, just singles. I suppose that still could happen, hits radio and singles
sales still totally dominate, but the demise of the album as a requirement
of stardom has been postponed at the very least.

one thing about these new pop artists is that unlike many in the past it is
no longer two hits and ten pieces of filler. they actually aim for every
track to be potentially a single, and then after the first single they let
radio and the market decide which tracks are eventually officially released as
singles. for example, according to wikipedia, 14 out of the 15 (!) tracks on
rihanna's latest have already charted as singles somewhere in north america
or europe, even though only three have so far been officially released as
singles. her management just watches which one is doing best, then do a
video for it, and presto you've got an instant already market-tested hit.

Can't see it here in the US...oh well, thanks anyway Big Al.

A CD is still a "record", because a record is just short for recording. The Grammys still have a category for Record of the Year. Likewise, album does not refer specifically to the type of material, but is just a collection of items in a single package, like a photo album or a record album.

I miss the Side 1 and 2 distinctions a lot though.
Sequencing was such an art. The end song of Side 1 e.g.. Or when you had a dark and light side, a slow and fast. But those are easy, block choices. It is way more subtle and refined to study the sequencing on the classic albums that are not too obvious.

But when you were stoned in your bedroom with the lights out and listening to Dark Side Of the Moon, wasn't it a nuisance to always have to rouse yourself to turn the record over when instead now you can just vegetate for another 20 minutes until the record has ended?

It is regretable that albums became unimportant. But record companies lost touch with reality in the nineties. In the nineties there were suggestions made that albums should become much more expensive. At the same time almost every act recorded albums with maybe five decent tracks and at least five fillers. Remember the idiotic "Nevermind" trend to leave twenty minutes without music on the disc? The internet was ignored, and that strategy was bound to fail.

A really interesting documentary and the 3 programmes on earlier in the week were quite good too. If you did not see them they were hosted by Danny Baker with 3 guests who discussed Rock, Pop and R&B vinyl favourites. The pop programme was the weakest to me (Sisters of Mercy - pop?). Each programme had a Bakers' dozen (13) albums on their wall of fame. Not necessarily the greatest albums in those genres but personal favourites - that was what made the programmes different.

Finally watched it and very good too. Thanks for posting. Biggest reactions were that I still think Wish You Were Here is vastly superior to Dark Side Of The Moon and that Tony Parson's, (who I like), is really talking bollocks when he says that the Stones and Bowie were washed up pre-punk. Black & Blue was a good album and as for Station to Station/Low/Heroe's - well I needn't add anything.

It's the covers that put me off. I love King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and some Moody Blues, but Yes is a no-no.

I don't miss flipping the record over but I do miss the art work. Album jackets used to be almost as important as the music. There are some really great album covers that is art in their own right.

Sgt Pepper is an awesome cover as is TSMR. Many more I've always like the Are You Experienced cover. I miss band photos too. The Stones first cover in UK is great no writing at all just five guys who seem to be looking through us.
