The thing is: whether the songs are good or not, I just never listen to these CD's. I can't remember the last time I played Voodoo Lounge, and I tried Steel Wheels a year ago after not listening to it for more than 5 years. Well, the sound is terribly dated with all the synths, I just couldn't bare it aymore after 30 minutes. To me, after Undercover there just isn't anything worth listening repeatedly to anymore, with the exception maybe of the first four songs of B2B. Then that CD also goes down the drain...

Funny because i'm just listening to Steel Wheels after a long time. I have the same problem with this album. It just doesn't do it for me anymore. But i rarely listen to the official albums anymore. I only listen to the "early" albums a lot. From aftermath on it's 90% bootlegs and 10% albums.
Slipping away Rock and a hard place Love is strong The worst New faces You got me rocking Anybody seen my baby? Out of control Saint of me Like a rolling stone ( Well, it`s much older than 20 years, but it`s an incredible good cover of a fantastic song)
Some of these songs sounds much better live than from the record. Continental drift is the greatest opener they have had on their tours and I think all of them has been good.
I can see Mathijs' point about Steel Wheels but I don't feel that way about Voodoo or B2B, I think those are both solid albums. Voodoo sounds better the more I play it.
I would have had a hard time with this a few days ago but got into Flashpoint the other night and found myself playing Highwire over and over. Was wondering why this did not get as much attention as other songs.
I'm not often in agreement with Mathijs - but I am in total agreement here. Those last three studio albums? I seriously may NEVER play them again. It's not that they are horrible - it's just that with all the other great Stones albums I have...not to mention the 4,500 other CDs I own - well, why the hell would I bother? I hope I won't feel the same about this year's new release - but the chances are I will at some point after a few listens. Seriously - how many of you out there have listened to the 4 new 40 Licks tunes in the past 6 months? Be honest.... The sad truth is that the studio magic has run it's course with these guys. Still a valid and worthy live act, thankfully....
I listen to the new stuff quite often and while I don't listen to 40 Licks I have played those new tunes quite a bit after putting them on their own cd. I have many friends who got into the Stones because of Bridges 2 Babylon. Go on to Amazon and read people's reviews of new albums, its obvious many people do enjoy these records. Mick's new Alfie songs, while hated by many here, have been praised by many people. I just think too many people here expect the Stones to sound like they did in the 70's and its not gonna happen.
I like B2B..at least the first 5 songs on it. Voodoo Lounge is just ok and Steel Wheels is a complete bust for me. My least favorite Stones disc. I only bought it because of Mixed Emotions and even that is low grade for them.
Low Down. A true Stones song, overlooked but a very strong song
Performed live ? Out of Control.....the show stopper on The Bridges Tour, great energy, Mick flipped out and the jams were great.
Other very good songs but you only asked for the best of the modern era. There are MANY very good songs since 1985. IMO, you have to accept each song and /or album as individual works and form your opinion. If you wish to compare everything to JJF, All Down The Line, Start Me Up, etc, you are missing out. Remember, the band dont care about radio play and # 1 hits that much, they just want too make a good ALBUM.
Low Down has all the elements that constitute a truly good Stones song, snarling KR guitar, excellent vocals and just enough skank on the production to keep it dirty.
The truest Stones song on Undercover is Too Tough. Here come the arguments..................
