Money (That’s What I Want)
(Berry Gordy Jr. / Janie Bradford)

De Lane Lea Music Recording Studios, Holborn, London, UK, November 14, 1963

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, tambourine
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica, backing vocals

The best things in life are free, look I'll give 'em to the birds and bees
I want money, yeah, that's what I want
That’s what I want, oh yeah, that's what I want

Money don't buy everything, it's true, what it don't buy I can't use
I want money, oh, come on baby, yeah
That's what I want, oh, that's what I want, come on, yeah, yeah, yeah

Your love give me such a thrill, but your love won't pay my bills
I want money, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
That’s what I want, oh yeah, that's what I want

Yeah, give me money, yeah, yeah, yeah
Lots of money, yeah, yeah
Well, if you want me to love you
Give me money
If you want me to squeeze you
Give me money
That's what I want
Oh yeah, that's what I want

Yeah, give me money, come on baby, lots of money
Yeah, now, if you want me to love you, give me money
If you want me to hold you
That's what I want, come on baby, give me what I want

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “The Rolling Stones” EP
(Decca DFE 8560) UK, January 17, 1964

A good but not spectacular cover. At this time so many bands were doing the routine rock and roll and r'n'b covers such as this and Johnny B. Goode that there was little to separate them on record.

It needed a mighty track like Around And Around for the Stones to really show the world that they were the governors of Chuck Berry style rock and roll.

After the Beatles version of Money, any Stones cover of it was pointless.

Only Stones cover they did that makes me cringe. Good point ab-why even cover it?

The original by Barrett Strong:

And them Stones boys:

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Very good cover, better than the Beatles or Barrett Strong
By the way, Brian Jones plays harmonica

Agreed, not one of their essential covers. But you gotta love that dirty harp sound.

Sorry, The Beatles recorded the definitive version. Lennon's vocals practically melt the grooves. The Stones is very marginal. Very poorly produced, and very little menace.

That Iggy versin is fracking awesome!

John Lee Hooker adapted it as "I Need Some Money".

However, like Fortune Teller, Under The Boardwalk, and Cherry Oh Baby, it's not a great Stones cover. Yes, the Beatles did it better, but there's an electro/SYNTH version from the 80s, I cannot remember by whom, that's fairly good.

I believe that is the video that was previously posted, The Flying Lizards, was a hit in the 80's.

The Beatles...

The take that closes With The Beatles is the definitive rendition, in my opinion. The Stones version - only initially resized on self-titled debut EP, I believe - is merely so-so. A very minor effort, indeed.

Barrett Strong's version is jazz. The Beatles version is pop. The Stones version is f-ing rock and roll dirty ass punk in your face.

I'd never really listened to either this or the Barrett Strong original until now - and I agree with 24FPS. I think my favourite of the three is Barrett Strong. The Beatles do a more competent cover - it's nearer the original, and better produced than the Stones, who can't quite bring off that tom-tom rhythm and add Brian on harp - but it's the Stones cover that has me tapping my feet, and after listening to it the Beatles version, good as it is, sort of drags...

A good illustration of what a powerful weapon in the Stones' armoury the harp was and is, whether Mick or Brian is playing it.

Given what a big part the piano plays in the original, it's surprising that Ian Stewart is nowhere to be heard on this - I wonder why.

Quite possibly one of the worst Stones tracks ever. They should never have touched it. They were only ever going to come second to the Beatles.

Shitty production and sound....could have been great cover if they produced it a bit clearer

But that's what makes it great, and makes the Beatles cover too slick. It's like the difference between the Beatles 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and the Stones take on it. You get the feeling in those early Stones cuts like they're recording it in some tiny shit hole and they've only got five minutes of studio time to cut it. Punk before punk even knew what punk was.

I never complain or criticize, but this Stones track in my opinion is the worst recorded song ever!!! Can't listen to it, so distorted and muffled. Sorry.

I believe John Lee Hooker began performing "i need some money" before Gordy came up with his recording. In fact Hooker instigated a court case against Gordy for plagarism. Hooker lost the case.

How about the version by The Sonics?

The Kingsmen almost make a surfing version of it.
