OK,

My Mom always told me that if I've got nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

Here's my opinion on this song:

My two and three year old boys just sing along and laugh when I play this.

I love this song but not this version. It's not that Keith is bad, he's fine, but I can't stand tom waits on this.

The thing is: when people first sung sea chanteys, they probably didn't have pretty voices, and, more than likely, sounded like Tom and Keith.

Im not really sure what to make of that,I think David Bowies new song is way better

And Do It Anyway

Typical on Waits, either you get it or run from it. I think it is pretty cool. Sounds like a bunch of rum heads rolling around on deck looking to keel haul someone.

That Feel is better than this, imo.

Btw, I like Dylan's take on this one much better.

I don't like Dylan's take on it: I do like Van Morrison's version.

It's not Waits I've got a problem with on this. Waits is fine.

As Eric Burdon once said, "Van Morrison has real soul."

And on occasion so does Keith Richards.

But not on"Shenandoah".

To be fair to our Keith, the song really is mostly Waits. Keith comes in with a few background vocals and some guitar near the end but, love it or hate it, it's really Tom Waits' song.

Then you should like it, because he's doing most of the singing...

One of the most dreadful durge-like renditions I've ever heard. Quite simply awful.

Satisfied since 1976

I played this earlier and am still lamenting the four minutes of my life I'll never get back.

I prefer Tom's pre-Player voice meself ... his voice was in FINE form
on "The Heart of Saturday Night", passable on "Swordfishtrombones",
but it's grating to the ear now ... I know why he smoked it into shape,
but the results are for a very small niche audience, ala Cap'n Beefheart.
Still enjoy much of his art, though. BRILLIANT lyricist.

If you think that's bad, I happen to like it, but there's an awful cover of Sure Nuff n Yes I Do by Ralph Stanley that I heard recently: it's on a Nick Cave / Warren Ellis soundtrack.

what a piece a crap waits is.

Safe to say you don't like grizzly bears with laryngitis either?

It's probably not a good idea to tell a grizzly bear with laryngitis that you don't like his singing.

It's probably a nice song under all that "grizzly bear with laryngitis" noise. Lost on me I'm afraid.

[ I want to shout, but I can hardly speak ]

Completely disagree with this. He got much better as a songwriter and Rain Dogs is the best thing he's ever done (Rod Stewart even had a hot with one of the songs). Mule Variations and Real Gone have some of his best work ever. He has continued to write great ballads - greater, I would argue than in his Heart Of Saturday Night Days. I think his early period had some nuggets, but those records were sentimental and the production was syrupy on a lot of that stuff. I do agree that that period seems to be more accessible for some people though.

The best of both eras is unbeatable. I'm digging Ol' 55 just as much as Underground or Rrreal Gone. Lots of goodies on the new album as well.
