What Do You Think Was The Rolling Stones MOST IMPORTANT RECORD ... ?

What would you say?

I would have to say it was "Honky Tonk Women" b/w "You Can't Always Get What You Want".
That one single in 1969 yielded these two defining songs... both of which have continued to be a major part of their live shows throughout their entire career ever since.

'Satisfaction' for cultural impact - it's the closest thing they have to a 'signature' song.

'Jumpin Jack Flash' for career impact - first single with Jimmy Miller, and musically a real game-changer. The launchpad for the period when they really were the GRnRBITW.

'Little Red Rooster' for legacy impact - to this day, the only blues record to have ever topped the UK or US charts*. In three minutes, they did what decades of legends of that genre were unable to do - bring the blues to the masses.

(* I know 'House of the Rising Sun' topped the UK charts - but it was recorded in a style somewhat removed from its bluesier origins)

Miss You for the "come back impact" in 1978

What about "Doom And Gloom" for "image reviving impact" in 2012?

Probably "Love Me Do".

I know JJF is probably the one history wise but I'm gonna go with Brown Sugar - the kick off of the 1970s and their new label, the opening lick to their independence.

The last time?

Their first self penned rock song. It showed them possibilities they would not have
conceived before. But boy, did the world change after that!

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Career wise....Satisfaction....They could have quit after this song and still be remembered!!

For Keeping their career going.. Without this album they would have had a
hard time going forward.. The record companies would not keep paying for poor selling albums.....

Some Girls PUT THEM BACK ON TOP...

Just to clarify the question, not most important song, but rather most important record. The answer can be a single or an album... but when you say "Brown Sugar", are you saying the single with Bitch on the flip side or Sticky Fingers?

Without the success of Start Me Up and Tattoo You I'm not so sure the band would have carried on in the 80s.

When it comes to albums, my vote would go for Beggars Banquet.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

That success became possible because of the success with Some Girls (and actually Emotional Rescue as well), imo.

Satisfaction - for achieving world renown status

Jumping Jack Flash - for shedding their pop persona and becoming a rock band

Tumbling Dice - for defining their career as the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world

The JJF single, where the Stones bid farewell to trying to be innovative, creative, artistic, and doing all those things that supposedly elevated popular music to a respected "art form", and went back to what they did, and since then, have always done better than anyone else - blues based rock and roll.

That said, if I had one 45 to take to a desert island, it would be the UK "Brown Sugar", backed with "Bitch" and "Let it Rock".

For me the most important record album was Sticky Fingers. The images combined with the music was a lifestyle dream that continues to haunt me to this day.

Beggars Banquet is a close second. That was the record which brought the Stones from a tart little english cover band to a richly textured original song writing machine, inho.

Funny when someone says record these days people are thinking of single songs, blame iTunes. peace

Exile On Main Street

it shows the band at their best, and every song is a gem.

Two of the greatest Rolling Stones songs ever are on it

Tumbling Dice and Shine A Light

In order to consolidate its position: Satisfaction/ The under assistant...

For The confirmation of the name: The world's best band: Honky Tonk woman/You can't always get....

While the Stones indeed had quite a few records that were career wise essential, I fully agree with you here. Satisfaction is out of question - it's an iconic song, and self-written at that.

I remember very well that when the mid-70's arrived, the Stones were regarded as "finished" by many rock fans. A dying band, so to speak. Here in Europe, many people who went to shows of the 1976 tour turned their backs on them, stating that the sound was "lousy" and that the actual playing of the band sounded "uninterested and completely boring". And Black And Blue did not have too many fans back then! The single "Fool To Cry" pissed off many.

It was "Miss You" and "Some Girls" which brought them back into the light. I don't know if they won many old fans back with these releases, I for one had open ears and started to dig the whole Punk thing anyway, and Miss You was finally a disco tune that I was able to dig - it was a fantastic mixture of disco beat and blues ingredients (the guitars! the harmonica!) and the hook was irresistible.

However, old fans aside, Some Girls won them a gazillion of new fans. And that was pretty crucial at the time.

Since the singles have been covered, I choose Let It Bleed. It was the first album where they were totally on par with the Beatles.

I'm with Gazza and his well thought-out post.

"Satisfaction" definitely separated the men from the boys when it hit radio. And it still does.

JJF grabbed everyone!

"Little Red Rooster" then and now one of my alltime faves.

Beggars Banquet

Beggars Banquet - the emergence of the Stones Mach II - the one that built the legacy that is now celebrated. Steeped in country blues - the rootsiest of all Stones' records. Also first record where tuning (in this case open E) was a significant part of the record.
