NANKERING WITH THE ROLLING STONES -The Untold Story of The Early Years - by James Phelge. Published by Acappella.'The most touching and perceptive memoir of the Rolling Stones early day's so far commited to print' -Mojo.

Yes a terrific read. you almost feel your inside their lives at this seminal moment - I can still hear myself laughing at some of their antics - a great read and I defy anyone who has read this not to hold it in high regard as one of the best ever books about the Stones.

Love the grey Dalton book from 72.And Roy Carr's.
There are many beautiful photo books.
For reading IMO the best books that tell about the Stones are not books about the Stones. "All the Rage" is Mac's autobio, then there was Marianne Faithfull's autobio, and like someone else mentioned Charone's book on Keith. Those books told me a lot about the Stones.

About the 70s: A Journey Through America with The Rolling Stones (Robert Greenfield)
About the 80-90s: Under Their Thumb (Bill German)

Agree with all the above, plus:

Stanley Booth's The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones (for the 1969 tour and Altamont),
Barbara Charone's bio for Keith in the 1970s, and of course
James Phelge's book for the sheer delight of meeting Stu's little three-chord wonders learning their trade in the squalor of Edith Grove...

James Phelge's "Phelge's Stones" was very good and of course Bill's Stone Alone.

Whatever happened to a second volume from Wyman? Was that ever a probability/possibility?

Others have mentioned Barbara Charone's KEITH RICHARDS: LIFE AS A ROLLING STONE , which I like, too, because she spends time with the Stones in the studio when they are recording Some Girls, which is my favorite Stones album.

It has passages like this (p. 172):

"In the end, after a full night's work, they haven't achieved a proper tempo, with Mick switching from acoustic to electric and back again. Jagger becomes irritated about the bass part, criticizing Wyman. In an unusually understanding mood, Richards explains the part to Wyman, telling him, `Play anything, it's the feel that's imporant.' By eleven o'clock in the morning Jagger leaves in a foul mood, kicking over the garbage can in the foyer and anything else in sight.

"Several nights later, the Stones spend ten hours unsuccessfully trying to play a track called `Shattered,' with most of the band inebriated beyond recognition."

Stanley Booth's book on The Rolling Stones is up close and personal at a crucial time for the band that no other book can match.
