O2 Second Night - Gimme Shelter with Florence Welch Appreciation Thread.

Mighty God in heaven. This version is the best I've ever heard. Florence Welch really does the song justice. I've always loved Lisa Fischer's take on it and I've long thought it would be hard to beat. That happened yesterday evening. Welch simply does an outstanding job on it, and I'm close to tears when she does the solo bit. Really a great, great version.

RELEASE IT AS A SINGLE ON iTUNES LADS!!!!!!!!

Despite the fact that they we're singing different words at the same time occasionally, I agree with the amazing energy this performance brought to the stage.

I am not a fan of guests, but I wanna hear this one again and again and again....

Plus I liked her dancing, she moved cool. She was really making Mick her bitch. HAHAHA sorry, i had to say it! I think he liked her energy and enthusiasm, but I think he prefers to be the aggressor in these situations, it was fun to see someone give it back to him. But then when it was over, she turned into cute fangirl and that made it even better.

Loved it!

Good singing & playing as well. Another practice would have helped work out the lyrics problem they ran into a few times, but the spontenaity made up for the mess ups.

The way she hugs and kisses them - it´s not that professional
showbiz thing - it´s really from the heart.

I found it amusing that Mick was constantly motioning Florence to play to the crowd and not to him.

Not sure who I liked more Mary J or Florence. Both had great moments but both had moments of uncertainty in their parts. Regardless, the song seemed to have gone on just too long than needed....6 or 7 minute versions? Nah. Let's cut it down and get rid of the vocal theatrics at the end and tighten the song up. It meanders too much in the middle.

But one thing can't be denied: each guest singer infused a nice kinetic energy to the song. Good thing too because the song's been getting a little stale as of late.

Loved her confidence & aggression. Fantastic version.
The Stones absolutely got it right & Florence was an inspired choice. Probably the best guest Gimme Shelter ever.
So grateful for all the film which allowed the fans who missed out to share a classic performance.

I've always had a lot of time for FLorence after seeing her at Glastonbury in 2010, she nailed her version of Fleetwood mac's 'The Chain' and had the audience in her hand. Great stage presence. I must have watched this clip of her doing Gimme Shelter 20 times today and I am more and more impressed with every viewing. She is simply brilliant and gives the song a whole new feel. The raw emotion and energy between her and Jagger is breathtaking. For those of you who were there last night I think you witnessed something that will go down in Stones history as one of the amazing moments.

I am hoping they will release this as a DVD/CD package maybe a compilation from the four shows - either way this will be sure to be on it. Mary J Bilge eat yer heart out.

I've got tickets for Glastonbury and since Florence is a regular there if the Stones play then I'm sure she will guest again an make my life complete.

She owned that stage. What confidence and such great chemistry between them. I think Jagger knew this was one for the ages. Simply amazing.

Her European tour ends on the 12th, so maybe she will be invited back for the Newark show on the 15th.

Yes, but I was more worried she'd might nail Mick's toes with those high-heels. eye popping smiley

so after Mick Taylor's Midnight "Happy Feet" Rambler we have a Gimme "Happy Feet" Shelter with Florence Welch.

heck, whats next?

I'm hoping for a "happy ending" with Mick & CindyC at the NYC show.

Sorry - I know this is an 'appreciation thread' but I was there and thought she was bloody awful. When she first came out it looked like she was going to attack Mick, then she proceeded to shout and scream her way through the whole song. Would much rather have had Lisa Fischer do it.

Apart from that though, the whole gig was magic from start to finish!

I wasn't there, so I cannot judge from that view. From what I can hear and see though, it's the best version of Gimme Shelter I've ever heard. The band is top tuned running on more than four cylinders, sounding a tad ramshackled, but with taste. That suits the song very well. Mick has his work cut out for him with Florence Welch, and she's doing some great vocals, not unlike Merry Clayton's original. Can't say I've ever heard it better. It's astonishing to see a band, who only has 4 shows under their belt in the last 5 years, do a version that tops all other versions I've ever heard, and I've heard quite a few.

I downloaded it in HD.

Absolutely brilliant.

This has to be up there with their greatest moments.

Greatest moments as in the time they stuffed Mick J in a freezer, or greatest performances as in Jumping Jack Flash from Hampton?

Difficult to compare the voices between the two nights. Maybe Mary J Blige has a technically better voice? However, maybe Florences voice better suits the song?

But performance wise this is streets ahead. No question. Wish I'd gone to the second night too!

I don't really know MJ Blige but everyone raves about her. All I'll say is I was slightly underwhelmed by her performance on the night, but then maybe she just doesn't have the stage presence.

Keith has a look on his face.

He knows.

Also.. Ronnie's guitar on this is not to be underestimated.
