Yes I totally agree. You can get a long way without any theory, and you don't even have to be able to read music either (like Paul McCartney?), but there comes a point where you HAVE to know some theory, otherwise you just stagnate - you hit a brick wall.

On the other hand if you just learn guitar and go through all the grades, it'll probably put you off guitar for life and it may stifle your creativity. Guitar playing has to be fun winking smiley

While it's true that most blues and rock songs can be played using just the minor pentatonic and most country and pop songs can be played using just the major pentatonic, Keith's playing is miles beyond just that.

The chord changes on "Make No Mistake", for example, are more than just a common I-IV-V change. Give the man his due.

this interesting topic that popped up is from the time my name was animal.
i am pretty familiar with those things but my opininon is that we should not overstata the importance of scales etc, fx and i doubt that chuck berry has no knowledae of those things

I think it´s something similar...I don´t know what scale but it sounds so pretty for me and very near to what Keith did on most recent tours

I don't really understand the question. How could the solo be in a different key from the song? I can see wanting a tab--though this solo is pretty simple--but not wondering about the key.

The key of the song stays the same. He just plays notes from the A chord, which are outside the "G scale".

Re: Guitar question: HTW solo/what key?

Keith is alternating between the G pentatonic blues scale (the start), the A pentatonic country scale (when the songs turns to A) and the D pentatonic country scale (when they change to D). Finally, he plays the last part of the solo in the G pentatonic country scale, not following the chord change with a change to D in the end.

the song is in G-major, the solo is in e-minor

<the solo is in e-minor>

Only the last part.

Playing F# with an Aminor is called a Dorian scale. It is a minor scale and works well with many cord progressions. Try it simple, just Am, G, Am, G. There are other cords you could put in there, through in a Bm.......etc. You think of more. The notes are A,B,C,D,E,F#,G. It is a Gmajor scale but the route note is A, (A Dorian).

Re: Guitar question: HTW solo/what key?

If you play A,B,C#,D,E,F#,G# it is an Amajor scale Ionian. Sorry in the post above to say F# played in A was a minor scale as I was just thinking of how to use it in an Aminor scale. It can be used in both Amaj(Ionian) Amin(Dorian).

Re: Guitar question: HTW solo/what key?

F# for Am,Em,G is not a bad note, maybe for the song Angie but not for just those cord together. Instead of thinking in the key of Am(Dorian) think in the key of Gmajor. Those cords all are in Gmajor. F# is also in Gmajor. The cords in Gmajor are G,Am,Bm,C,D,Em,F#dim. The notes of a Gmajor scale are G,A,B,C,D,E,F#. If Em was the route note the cord prog. would be an Aeolian scale.
Sorry everyone but I was posting this for mighty Mathijs. Being such an authority on guitar and guitar playing he seems to have forgotten his scales.
That being said its all in the playing you either got "it" or you don't.smiling smiley

I know nothing about scales, BUT I am quite sure that the E in Angie is a an E7 not an Em. Does the F sharp still work?

In my posts I was not referring to the song Angie but, if a F# works with an Aminor cord. Yes F# works with E7.

Well not exactly. E minor is the relative minor of G major but you have the right idea.

E minor cord is also in the key of C major and D major and G major......

Playing a D or a F# in the Am / E7 progression of Angie might work theoretically, but it sounds awfull.

Again I was not referring to Angie HTW or any other songs just that F# IS part of the A minor Dorian scale!!!!!!!

Again I'm not talking about the cords in Angie just that F# on Aminor, Eminor, and G is absolutely NOT wrong!

You're quoting postings done a year ago or something.

Yeah, relative minor key, but same notes. I'm no theory expert but can play a servicable lead (most of the time).

I didn't notice how old this thread was, I just started reading as someone else recently replied. I also was surprised at your "guitar lessons". Your posts are always interesting so I was surprised at your response. As to quoting posts from a year ago or something the dorian scale has not changed. Just try these notes over a Am cord A,B,C,D,E,F#,G, while mixing it up of coarse.

Oh ya I hear you are a pretty good player anyway so more likely for others who are learning to play this is better guitar or music advise.

Might work theoretically? Are you making up something?

Hi folks

I play guitar too and I've found that playing HTW solo in G and Eminor pentatonics is how Keith plays it not in the key of G and then A.

With regards to Dead Flowers the solo is played in the key of Bminor. If you listen to country a lot you'll soon work out that solos are played in the minor key and not the major. So for example play a standard 12 bar progression in G in a country style. If you play a solo in G it won't sound country because the melody line is in a minor key and as we're playing in G we should have the melody in Em and therefore the solo in Em.

Hope this makes sense

country honk in G
cause it is played G C G D G with variations throuout the song, of course.

Would that fit? Try.
