Silver Train: played in open G? and what does it mean?
Posted by: mrrockandroll ()

This song is my favorite at the moment! but I have two questions about it:
- does Keith play his part (the riff) in Open-G? In the videoclip definitely not, but on the record?
- I know what 'Silver Train' means in Dutch literally speaking... but what does it mean/stand for??? Is it some metaphor for something?

Thank you!

I'm Dutch you see, so I think in a Dutch way... even when I'm reading English! so that's the point; things you sometimes just don't see when you're not a native speaker! ;-)

The riff is played exactly the same whatever tuning (standard or OpenG). But with openG you've got more strings ringing.

Knowing Mick Jagger "Silvertrain" probably means his d*ck...

'Silver Train' is no slang that I know of (I'm American).

Heard of 'riding/driving a train' as slang for using cocaine ("Casey Jones" - Grateful Dead, "Driver 8" - REM, etc). Also 'pulling a train' for a girl performing sex on several guys.

The song has a great bass part in it.

Yes, it's in Open G. Both the rythym and the tuning for the slide part.

It is in open G and Steve Appleford states in his book "Rip This Joint: The Rolling Stones Song by Song" (or It's Only Rock and Roll or whatever the title happens to be now) that the song is about a run in with a prostitute. So that's his opinion on the subject.

I believe that "Silver Train" was written for Johnny Winters who recorded it around the same time as the Stones so he may be the silver train being an albino and all.

I think sometimes lyrics don't have a meaning, whether you speak English or Dutch. Sometimes they seem to be in the universal language of Gibberish winking smiley .

But it's interesting to hear all the theories about Silver Train that are being suggested. I think we all can decide whether we like any of the theories - or not!

Of course not. This was when Keith was going through an embroidery and heirloom sewing phase.

Please don't speak when you have a song in your mouth. That's just not good manners.
