Best Special Guest Performance Tonight?
Posted by: paulm ()

My picks: sentimentally, Mick Taylor; technically, Jeff Beck.

But the Biebs may be a dark horse; don't count him out for delivering a show-stopping set, especially if he and Jagger start trading on-stage moves.

My pick : Chuck!
He's not a band member, rather a special guest who's overstayed his welcome... for far too long.

Mick Taylor would be the best to me. Never thought I'd see it happen. Of course, I still won't see it happen in person because I'm thousands of miles away, but it's happening somewhere. And that's enough to make me happy.

Bieber is in Toronto tonight performing at the Grey Cup. Sorry to disappoint you!

Good to be happening here...good to be happening anywhere.

Whoa...you're right. As these shows are basically coinciding, Biebs would not be able to perform at both shows confused smiley

The big question for me is how many songs will Taylor and Wyman guest on, and will they appear together? I guess we'll know soon enough!

Only 2-3 hours left until your bubble is popped and you will see The Stones are the same band with or without Lumpy Taylor and Boring Wyman.

You just don't quit, do you? For someone who often chastises others for their perceived negativity, your hostility to what were two actual members of the band is quite puzzling. Maybe now I should be the one calling you "grumpy" and accusing you of "hating" the Rolling Stones, as you often have done to me.

But no matter. Not letting you spoil my fun. Only wish I could be there.

If you think these two appearing on stage for 2-3 songs will magically turn back the clock to 1972.... well... you are about to have your bubble popped.... and dont forget you have a pile, a huge stack of negative credits, for all the Ronnie bashing you have done, and do.... and you can feel free to call me anything you want.

And who said I thought that it would be like 1972? You are projecting your assumptions onto me again. Why can't you just enjoy the reunion (however brief) like the rest of us, for what it is, rather than trying to use it to make some kind of petty internet fansite point?

Ronnie is no quitter... and all you do is bash him... and he has been with them faaaaaaaarrr longer than your hero Lumpy Taylor.... who quit.... as did Boring Wyman... who also quit.... they are quitters... and yet you fawn over them like fallen heros.... they quit. If the rest of the band were like your heros... there would be nothing but football going on today... they all would have quit.

OK, Max. Sure.

Seriously, I don't see this brief (probably mostly symbolic) reunion with these two great former members in the context of any kind of Taylor/Wood debate or anything like that. I am happy all six living Rolling Stones will be onstage together - however briefly. That includes Ronnie, of course. I'm a fan of the band my whole life, and admittedly a bit sentimental about this moment. I hope it's musically exciting and meaningful, but I'm just happy they are doing it all. It would be nice if they paid tribute to Brian in some way too.

No, Ronnie is no quitter cool smiley Let's hope he adds something significant this evening, unlike Taylor, who refused to play the second fiddle on stage, but stood there to make music. Let's hope he can do it once more.

No one should expect these guest performances to be too much of a highlight, too much risk for the Stones without serious rehearsals! Can't let 'em steal the show.
But I love that Taylor is included and am dying to hear the results. peace

I just wonder if Jeff Beck will be able to effectively infuse his incredible technical prowess into a band that's famous for it' somewhat sloppy weaving without infusing a Spinal tap nigel tufnell/ absurdist vibe?

the funny thing was that Bill slotted in to his "old" position, played virtually statically, smiled, said a few words to Keith, Ronnie, Charlie; was wound-up a little by Mick. No different than 20 years ago. Just looked his age.

Mick Taylor was trailing Jagger around the stage like a lost puppy dog. Seeking the spotlight he has clearly missed. Maybe trying to emulate Jeff Beck's presence. His playing was great at times, licks you hear on bootlegs from '69, '71, '72 and '73.

Bill got a muted welcome and cheer - low key as ever. Taylor sought, and received, a much bigger cheer. I guess because he played some brilliant stuff, whereas Bill (for those who knew who he was.....) just made the rhythm section work.

Thanks for summing it up perfectly.
Taylor was leading the band the moment he came on, he had great presence and on top of that he was brilliant musically.

I know... I'm hard to follow sometimes.

Mick Taylor was the best for me - I loved that Midnight Rambler. Jeff Beck isn't my bag and IMHO Fergie did a better job on Gimme Shelter at Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame than Mary J. Blige did last night.

Mick Taylor. No contest.
Jeff Beck, despite his technical prowess, seemed in the wrong place and just didn't fit. Taylor on the other end, really made something special happen.
