Gimme Shelter prominent in new film "Flight"

Just saw the film Flight starring Denzel Washington last night. Gimme Shelter was played many times. The film was pretty good but some of the best parts were certainly accompanied by the Stones tune.

Anytime the drugs and alcohol were about to become part of the plot, Gimme Shelter would play. John Goodman's part as a drug dealer was especially good, it was probably his idea to include that tune. peace

Saw it tonight. SFTD was also featured prominently. Good film, except it sort of turned into an AA commercial at the end.

Saw this a couple weeks back. Totally agree with your assessment, 71Tele. I enjoyed the film a lot, especially the parts before it became a bit like an after-school special for grown-ups. John Goodman was superb. And yes, it was Sympathy that I remember being featured most predominantly. Some really great scenes in this movie... worth a watch despite its faults.

Try to get hold of "Layer Cake" w/ Daniel Craig ... great movie! and, of course featuring Gimme Shelter...

Casino by Martin Scorcese also featured Gimme Shelter. The use of this song in films deserves its own thread.

We just saw "Flight" in Jan. and what struck me was the prominence of "Sympathy For The Devil," just a little tune from Brian Jones' era. Was John Goodman's entrance theme song & he was a hoot as Denzel Washington's coke dealer. Brian would've approved the storyline, indeed! Can't miss "Gimme Shelter" throughout either. The flick is worth a watch.

Am I the only person who thinks this way, but isn't Gimme Shelter being overly used in too many movies? It is a great song, but too much is too much. The Stones have recorded something like 400 songs or maybe more.So why not use other songs?

If a director is going for a mysterious and druggy feel, why not go for something like It Must be Hell, Soul Survivor, or Stray Cat Blues.

Gimme Shelter is a cliche.

No 'sort of' about it. I felt abused after watching it. They took a perfectly good story and ruined it with that AA crap.

Budweiser objected to the drinking and driving. Can you believe that?

Gimme Shelter is a cliche.

Directors aren't really concerned with turning people on to deep album cuts, and audiences in general (many of whom probably aren't Stones fans at all, or probably casual fans at best) aren't really looking to hear them. It's a popular/recognizable song. Yes, it is becoming cliche to us, but to the general public it isn't. Somebody who isn't a Stones fan probably doesn't know or care how many times it's been used in movies. Cliche works for casual fans, just like they don't mind hearing all the "war horses" at concerts, on the radio, etc. It's what people who don't listen to The Stones every day want. They like to hear the songs they know. Recognition and repetition works on a certain level. To the casual fan it gets a "Hey! I know that song!" reaction, as opposed to "Is that the Stones?" if they played some deep album cut. Gimme Shelter is a hit because people like to hear it. Which works better for a film than a song they might end up liking, but could just as easily not get any reaction. It's become cliche because it really does work in setting a mood. Which is really all a director cares about. I hear what you're saying though, but that's a dilemma most of the population of the world doesn't really face, because that song isn't as played out to them. And whether people know it or not, the recognition of the song and how it is normally used in a film sets a mood. Soundtracks are very important to a movie as we all know, and it's not always about the best songs, but the right songs. Because of the way it is used it lets people know how they should feel during a scene.

Agreed with NoCode. Although when I heard it in the movie, I still got a kick out of it and smiled even though after the trailer I knew it would be in there.

Want to talk about using a deep cut. I almost started applauding when Argo used Little T&A for a second in the film! Nice job Affleck!

Although, if the object was to use music from the time of the events outlined in Argo (as the other popular songs in the movie were) they failed with Little T&A, which wasn't released until August of 1981, long after the events upon which the movie is based took place.

I find it more of a coincidence that also Going Down was played in the movie.

I noticed that also. But still thought it was cool that they used it, and maybe makes it even cooler that they really wanted to use it even though it was the wrong time period. Possibly it was one of their favorites and figured they could use it and get away with it.

Most people won't notice. Outside of the Stones fan community I doubt anybody really noticed or cared it was a couple years off. A film can be nitpicked to death by one segment of the population or another, but in general people will just take it for what it is. I noticed on that show "Justified" there were several comments on IMDb by Kentucky residents about how it clearly looked nothing like Kentucky, and what an oversight it was for the show's makers to film in a location that was clearly not Kentucky. But for people like me, and everybody else who doesn't live in Kentucky it's not really an issue. If they tell us it's Kentucky, then it's Kentucky. It's not accurate, but not that important either. The makers of Goldfinger didn't worry about portraying an accurate Fort Knox to cater to the select few who had actually been inside and actually know what it looks like. I doubt Affleck was really concerned with what the people who actually knew Tattoo You was released in '81 would say, it was a song he probably liked, felt would fit in, so he used it.

There's a trailer around on TV at the moment for a programme on guns in America and the Sandy Hook shooting - and the music they are using is a lullaby version of Paint It Black, very sinister indeed.

During Flight I noticed more Sympathy For The Devil played than Gimmie Shelter. It was John Goodman's entrance theme. Thought ending reminded of Scared Straight more than AA.

It's a MOVIE. Or whatever. It's not real! If someone is doing soemthing that is historically accurate, well, OK, I can see how it could be an issue. I guess Oliver Stone is the only one that has done that in terms of big commercial movies. The Dukes Of Hazzard movie from a few years back, the city scenes took place in Atlanta, as I recall, of which, to my understanding, a good bit of was filmed in New Orleans (Lee Cirlce, I think the French Quarter or the CBD and the Pontchartrain Expressway).

To hell with historical accuracy...
