OT: Neil Young

I bought Neil Young, Greatest Hits today.
It's a great cd, the songs are perfectly remastered, in my opinion. Great Sound. Runtime 76 minutes! What a great song Cinnamon Girl is!
I only have two Neil Young CDs so far - the Greatest Hits and On The Beach.
Can you recommend me some of his other albums?

After the Gold Rush, Live Rust and Harvest are all great. I can list more but that is a good starting point. The song Powderfinger is one of my favorite Neil Young tunes. He is such a great musician.

There are so many great albums to recommend! "Zuma", "American Stars and Bars" "Time Fades Away" and "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere" are all stellar! One of the things I love about Neil is he always taking chances with his music rather sticking to a tried and true formula. I'm with you on "Powder Finger" Hound Dog. The controlled feedback he gets on the version from "Rust Never Sleeps" just before the second guitar solo sends chills up my spine everytime I hear it. A great musician!

KeithRichards,

It's taken me till now to realise what the fuss is about.

He has so many strengths - but he has the same feel as Keith for tone in his 'lead' guitar phrases. They really are quite simple but he gets every ounce of bite and feeling out of them. Master of Melody too.

And its the rapport between him and his band. Crazy Horse and Neil Young are equal partners, imo. It's like calling the Roplling Stones KR or MJ. They have such a feel for his music. The drummer is a bit of a Charlie. Solid - but great sense of mood. Infact, on the songs I've heard, they make so much out of such simple riffs, rhythms and melodies - because of their total tonal compatibilty. They are strong and forceful, without overplaying.

Most HM bands would kill for some of those riffs. But they wouldn't know what to do with them.

Great production too.

Thanks guys!

Deidre, I fully agree with you - his playing is as "basic" as Keith's playing, and with maximum feeling. And I love the production too - if you can call it production because it seems to me as they wanted to reproduce the way they really sounded in the studio, without any extras/gimmicks/overdubs...
Really cool. I'm drunk, btw... too much Glögg/Glühwein, or whatever you call it...
Listening to Neil Young is even cooler now, and Lou Reed, I bought his best of album too...

I never enjoyed Neil Young so much. It just isn't my taste. But I'm sure he's good song crafter.

Neil deserves a place in rock and roll heaven for "Like A Hurricane" from "On The Beach."

Buy the double live-CD "Weld"
Also recomend "Tonight's the night" (Only vinyl as far as I know)
It has a song called "Borrowed tune" and it goes: I'm singing this borrowed tune, I took from the Rolling Stones. (It is Lady Jane)

Neil Young and Crazy Horse might be one of the most underated bands coming out
of that generation.

Neil Young is great on acoustic like KEITH and has his own unqiue ELECTRIC
GRUNGE Sound and love is killer electric playing

Lots of albums you should hear... Rust Never Sleeps is a great one imo. Also try Neil Young unplugged and listen to Look Out For My Love and Transformer Man, just masterpieces (as is the rest of the album).
I saw the DVD "Last Waltz" from The Band and Neil performed Helpless, Helpless. Trust me Lorenz, you need to hear that one too.
No one mentioned Harvest Moon, the sequel to Harvest.

Oh yeah, get WELD indeed. If Neil wasn't in your top list of all time greats, this album will do the job. Just listen his lead guitar work on Powderfinger and Like A Hurricane. It'll blow you away.

Actually Hurricane is on "American Stars n Bars". Agree that's it's an all-time classic as well as Cortez the Killer on Zuma.

Best Neil Young IMO:

folkie/soft stuff - After the Goldrush, Harvest, Comes a Time
rocking/electric - Zuma, Ragged Glory

Wow, is this a record, two years and one and a half months between posts?!

I just got into Neil Young recently, he is a great songwriter. The song 'philadelphia' from the movie of the same name is heart-breaking.

I like almost all Neil Young has done with one (warning) exception: DVD movie The Year of The Horse was a real disappointment, a real mess..

I really like his Unplugged album from the early 90's. Awesome versions of Old Laughing Lady, Helpless, Harvest Moon and Long May You Run!

What about the one he recorded with Pearl Jam? I think it's called "Mirrorball" or something like that; it features "Downtown", which is a great rocker!!!

Yeah, but I think it was the whole string of records(Trans, Everybody's Rockin and Old Ways) that made Geffen sue him.

According to my old Rock'n'Roll encyclopedia the lawsuit was formulated kind of like this:

"...for making non-commercial records that the public didn't associate with Neil Young."
