OT: Jefferson Starship last night
Posted by: nashville ()

Amidst all of the hype and panic over Stones tickets it is always reassuring to know that there are still great bands touring for £15 a ticket. Saw Jefferson Starship last night at Chatham Central Hall of all places. Kantner, Freiberg and co put on a great show. Plenty of hits and a few interesting delves into the back catalogue (Lather). They also played some unusual covers - Dark Side of the Moon, Set the Control to the Heart of the Sun and Space Oddity. If they tour near you go an see 'em - you won't be disappointed.

I've seen them four or five times over the years and they are always great. Very cool that they played Lather. And those covers sound incredible. They never played any covers when I saw them. Man, I hope some bootlegs of those songs come out, hearing them play Pink Floyd might trigger some sort of massive psychedelic event in my brain. Bring it on!

Paul Kantner is great... and it is good to hear he is still out playing.

If he comes my way, I will see him.

You're thinking of Starship with Mickey Thomas. Jefferson Starship is more like a Jefferson Airplane of the 21st Century thing. I've seen them. They're good. Older than dirt, but good.

Yeah, but I thought the line up was pretty much the same (with some exceptions) in all those eras (JA, JS and S)?

Most of the singing is done by Cathy Richardson who is superp. David Freiberg did a few solo spots - Harp Tree Lament, Fresh Air (the QMS song),Jane & space Oddity. Paul Kantner sings a lot of harmony and the occasional verse.

There was a sliver in time, back when they released "Freedom at Point Zero" and "Modern Times", and both Micky and Grace were singing live in concert, and Craig was playing guiar, and Paul was there... and it was kicked ass rock and rolling... then it all imploded and they went seperate ways... split the band names... I saw 2-3 of those shows in the magic moment and it was then that I abandoned the concept of "The best show I ever saw"... and if became "Top 20 50 shows I have seen"....

That's Cathy in the video I posted. David, who you can just barely see in the video, has got to be in his mid-70s by now, god bless 'em.

Good news they are still at it. Time to get Jorma, Jack and Grace back in and do a Airplane tour!

What are Jorma and Jack doing these days - still playing as Hot Tuna? No chance of Grace ever appearing onstage again - she is happy in her retirement. David Freiberg still has a great voice.

Sounds fantastic! I saw them a few times in the 80's and it was a fantastic show. Some cheesy stuff, but very good stuff too. That clip you posted Tatters is fantastic, sent chills along the back of the neck.

Yeah, they still tour as does Jorma solo. Saw Hot Tuna twice in the last 5 or 6 years and they still sound great. Your right about Grace, but you never know.

I feel honored to have seen the Great Grace Slick in concert, that woman kicked rock and roll ass, and as I recall she was pretty funny with her stage banter too. I love her A LOT!!!... I even took a picture.... waana see? Here is a picture of my picture

And Grace and Paul... this was the Modern Times tour.... it was awesome.

Thank you smiling smiley.... this was back in the early 80s, and it really was a great show... between Paul Kantner and Craig Chaquico on guitars and Aynsley Dunbar on drums and both Micky and Grace singing... and their 2 most recent albums being full of great rock and roll... and their history (stage presence) and all of their great songs... it was really a (now) top 50 show... they blew the roof off, and became my fav band... and then were gone with the winds of change.

Yeah great band, Saw them in 1975 (Long Island) and 1982 (S. California). Two great early albums are Blows Against The Empire and Sunfighter (Kantner/Slick). Highly recommended if you do not have them.

Thank you...
I was hoping for hard charging rock and roll. When I talked about there was a small sliver in time when this band kicked ass rock and roll, I am not really into the esotaric moody groovy hipppy stuff... Although I will go see Kantner's group today, even though it is not like the sliver, Paul kicks ass... he is awesome

Please do not take offense... it is all opinion.... and I appreciate the suggestions... thank you.... But I like the trashy throw away kick ass rock and fkn roll which a lot of people here dont really care for... which is fine... it is all opinion.

I like this stuff... "From the sliver in time" ( Hey, that might be a cool album name)

e.g.

And yeah, heading anyone off at the passs....
I am very well aware this stuff wont be liked by most here (but maybe one person will be enlightened, and that is why I post it)... anyways... no need for anyone to post a lengthly, hating diatribe

Max - you mentioned you liked Grace Slick a lot, so just wanted to know if you had heard these two albums. I personally love her vocals on these records. And these two albums were more or less the bridge from the 60's Airplane to the 70's Starship even though the Airplane's last gig was in Sept of 72.

Diverging for a second - I also think that Jack Cassady is probably one of the best basses in rock even though he rarely ever appears on anyone's top ten. Even Grace has said she loved his playing.

Ride the Tiger from the Starship is a great song...
