Keith 'Richard' explained

Can someone give me the backstory on why Keith briefly changed his name to Keith Richard? I remember hearing it was for tax purposes. Not sure I understand how this helps with taxes. I was surprised he didn't mention it at all in his book Life.

Richards was back in 1978, methinks.

He dropped the s because of, at the time, slightly more known Cliff Richard!

His real surname is actually Richards, but ALO thought it would be a good idea to draw comparison to Cliff Richard, just to generate additional write-ups in the press. It was eventually dropped, but for many years the confusion still lingered. In the opening credits to the Gimme Shelter movie in 1970, he is still listed as Keith Richard.

The inverse of that is when people mistakenly say Ronnie Woods...on the cover of I've Got My Own Album To Do it's spelled that way with the S crossed out.

I once read that he wasn't getting along with his Dad and didn't want to have the same last name. Later they became close again, and he added the s back.

This is the story I heard too... a rebel thing.

I also read somewhere that Richard without s sounded more "pop".
Ridiculous.

Surely it wasn't brief, right? It was that way for decades - he became Richard in the 60s to suggest a relation to Cliff Richard and he didn't change it back to Richards until the 90s, IIRC.

That which maketh my toes to curl and mine eyes to water is the writer who believeth that any sentence becometh Elizabethan when "eth" is added to the ends of random words where it doth not belong. Yea verily!

But if that were the case, he could have dropped the "Richard" part as well and the "Keith" part to distance himself completely and just become Elmo Lewis, since Brian was no longer using that stage name.

Keith needed to go undercover and dropped the 's' to unveil the methinks amp dealers - he scored some too.

Vox, Fender, Ampeg, Boogie

Briefly was a probably a poor choice of words. Methinks the actual date range 'Richard' was used was 1963-1978. On second thought, a band who's catalogue spans 50 years, 15 years may be considered brief.
