OT: How Do You Like The New James Bond Theme Song?

More to the point, how do you like the new James Bond(s)? As for JB themes, the last great one was Live And Let Die. And if you want proof, has there ever been any other theme since that has been covered by such a disparate range of artists, including the likes of Guns N' Roses, Lizzy Borden, The Mantovani Orchestra, one of The Spice Grils, and even original Bond themestress Shirley Bassey?

Anyway, this talk of James Bond theme songs is just academic, because anyone who is anyone knows that Sean Connery was the only James Bond.

Yes, I was going to cite this one as well. I'll take Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger any day--er, um, sounds a bit suggestive I know, but hey, it's only rock-n-roll.

I did finally click on the Skyfall theme above--the 5th word of the song is "heartburn". Alas, I could stomach no more...

These two are gooders also...

But shouldnt we be discussing Bond woman?

Sean Connery, yes, of course. Live and Let Die - obviously best tune. We know, we know, we know. Duh.

It's not what tatters was asking, he was asking how we like the new James Bond theme.

I like it fine and I hope there will be swimming, silhouetted women onscreen for it.

thumbs up Right on smileys with beer

Picking just one is like picking one BEST Stones song, there are too many BESTs to pick juts one... and Bond... time and place and memory it all adds to what is best... Of course Live and Let Die is a perfect Bond song.... People should cut Paul McCartney some slack for producing that Bond theme song alone. It is risky business writing a Bond song... you dont wanna piss people off... I think the Stones were actually asked to do a Bond theme song, but they chickened out...errrr I mean they declined the invite.

Bond women? Sure, what the hell. Kim Basinger was a Bond woman, but the theme to Never Say Never Again wasn't all that memorable.

On the other hand, the theme song for 1983's other Bond flick by Rita Coolidge was better.

The "Octopussy" character was played by Maud Adams.

Bond trivia: name the other notorious Bond woman character with "pussy" in her character name.

It slipped my mind for a moment, believe it or not. Hey, did you know that Moonraker Bond villain Richard Kiel was also in two separate episodes of Kolchak: The Night Stalker?

Shirley Bassey also did the Moonraker theme (originally meant for Frank Sinatra, then Johnny Mathis! Kate Bush was also offered the song, but turned it down):

And here she is performing it:

And, for your amusement, the disco version:

Moonraker featured Lois Chiles as, hehe, "Dr." Holly Goodhead:

A month or so ago I made cool DVD...

Starz channel was showing James Bond movies all month and on their preview channel they had 18 original Bond movie trailers for viewing.... I stated off watching just 1 or 2..... but later whne I was bored, and there were no good threads going on IORR.... I went back and watched (DVD'd) them all... it was fun to watch/see what they thought were highlights of each movie... and to hear the voice over guy being all dramatic abou tthe bad guys... and previewing the Bond girls.... and Bond cars and Bond gadgets... for 18 movies.

NICE!!!

Between playing the Munsters theme or James bond theme,
I dont know which one is the most fun to play on guitar...
or is it playing the theme to "The Good bad and The Ugly"

I was wondering why they didn't include Casino Royale among the chronology of Bond themes. I mean, Peter Sellers as James Bond? Absolutely classic. Best Bond ever!

And for a great Bond theme song, you can't miss with Dusty Springfield doing this Burt Bacharach composition (with lyrics by Hal David):

Best is Live And Let Die of course. Last good one was Goldeneye by Tina Turner. The Stones got offered that one as well, but turned it down. I'm messing up some years here. I think The Spice Girls was brought up for a Bond song, but it was decided that they weren't big enough. Then The Stones was offered it, but turned it down. Then they landed on Tina Turner. Was something like thar, although I'm sure I'm off a few years. Mid-90s though.

I imagine they all must be pretty fun to play on guitar. My trouble is I can only play chords, no leads. The Standells appeared on an episode of The Munsters, do you have that one? Also, a bit of the Bond theme appears on one of the instrumental tracks on the Beatles Help (U.S. version) soundtrack. Funny to hear a sitar breaking through the middle of the Bond opening theme.

And here are The Standells covering The Beatles on Los Munsteros:

Diamonds Are Forever is a better song than Live And Let Die. So is this.

Well, they did have their Voodoo Lounge album and tour at the time, and besides, why would they? A Bond theme, though it's guaranteed free promotion to produce a potentially big hit, is really a bit outside The Stones' rather insular box. As a rule, the Stones don't do festivals, [only rarely] television, or movie theme songs--they are simply their own part-time mobile corporation. And besides, sources reveal that The Stones were asked to perform the theme for GoldenEye, but don't mention anything about their having been asked to actually write the theme song.

Here's an interesting tidbit on early James Bond films. Apparently, they were not originally considering having Sean Connery back for From Russia With Love. They were going to bring in Alfred Hitchcock to direct with Cary Grant playing James Bond, but scrapped those plans when Vertigo flopped at the box office.

Well there is no time like the present to start playing some lead... take a look at the tabs... pull up youtube to hear em... and have some fun...those are also crowd pleasers, so you get something for you efforts. Thise are gooders to play around with... and they will make you smile coming out of your amp.

Yes, it is a good time to get the fingers working on some lead playing. And those themes? Why not?

Say, here's another Bond video comp from YouTube, a little something for a few chuckles, featuring 20 bloopers:

This is exactly correct. When I first started learning to play (and I am still learning) that was all I played. I wanted to hear things I loved to hear, and when I finally got it, when I could play those sounds I loved down to my bone marrow... AWESOMENESS!!

Plenty of tabs around the internet... they are your friend, of course some are wrong (drop them quickly) but some are perfect. Between youtube and the tabs and your guitar and fingers and amp... and a beer... you cant find better "free" fun.... and when you play them for people, they always smile..... and you'll be grinnin like Herman Munster busting through his front door

I found that lesson looking for Hermann smashing through the door winking smiley.... It actually looks pretty good.... tabs at the end. Cheers to the man who posted it thumbs up

Yes, I've just printed out the tab from GuitarTab.com. AZChords.com also seems pretty good. Tabs.Ultimate-Guitar.com also has several versions. They each have subtle differences, so I'll interpret with caution. Found this YouTube clip as well:

Speaking of Bond theme songs, the opening for 1974's The Man With The Golden Gun [sung by Lulu] kind of sounds like an early 1970s Hammer Dracula film, which is kind of a funny coincidence because the Bond villain in this particular installment happens to be none other than one of my favorite English actors, Christopher Lee. Muhammad Ali was so impressed with Lee on the set of the movie, that he dedicated a fight to him (see James Bond's Secrets link from my post above).

Skyfall sounds quite good. Reminds me of Goldfinger. Good production and nice vocals.
As for Bonds? Well Yes Sean was great in Dr. No, From Russia with Love (my fav), Gold Finger, and Thunderball. Diamonds are Forever was terrible. And he was terrible in it. All of Moore's were terrible. Comeday spy thrillers that reminded me more of Get Smart than Ian Flemming. Now the unsung hero is Lazenby in on Her Majesty's Secret Service. That is a great film. Dark, taunt and a good story.
Then there is Casino Royal (the recent version) and it was fantastic. A real thriller, and a great movie. The next one was absolute RUBBISH! Terrible, one of the worst. So I hope Skyfall is better.

I think this is a great song (Adele's Skyfall that is). Seems like a throwback to the Bassey and 60's number. That being said my favorite theme is definetly Diamonds Are Forever. That riff is so smooth sounding and combined with the suggestive lyrics is well sexy.
I have come to appreciate You Only Live Twice after its excellent use on the season 5 finale of Mad Men. It has a great mix of Eastern and Western sounds on it. Also On Her Majesty's Secret Service (the theme not the Armstrong song) is pretty good with its early use of synths.

Adele's tune is better than most recent fare, but let's face facts: John Barry WAS Bond.
No Connery, no Barry, No Bond. Craig and the rest are good, but it ain't the same.
"Skyfall" is good but lacks punch. Just not as much fun.

Love the instrumental titles. Proof Barry was King:
