Debate: Ronnies Best Live Solos w/Stones
Posted by: Cafaro ()
Date: September 30, 2012 01:38

As we sit in our hotel suite in NYC awaiting to see Jack White, a debate as stirred up:

What solo is Ronnie's best in concert with the Stones?

One of my favorites is Brown sugar from Love You Live. I also love his grooves from Hot Stuff and Negrita on the 76 tour.

Some here feel it's YCAWYW.

What are some of your favs? Let us know.

BTW: We met some of the women who are in his band tonight.....can't wait to meet them later in their suite smoking smiley.

I always figured that BS solo on LYL was dubbed. It's three times lounder than anything else on the tune.
Confirmation anyone? Live or dubbed?

I assumed that too. Although when one Listens to other shows from that tour, the solos are pretty close

Love his playing on You Got to Move from 75 and 76

You can afford a hotel suite in NYC [when landlords are creating 150 square foot "apartments" for people who can't afford to live in NYC]? You can afford a ticket to see jack White? You can afford to breathe the overpriced air in NYC to debate such things, when I could barely afford the fish sticks and french fries that barely gave me the strength to type this post? I wish I could afford the price of a Ronnie Wood solo album the way Ronnie Wood can afford the price of an underage model girlfriend [or a hotel suite in NYC!]...

ADTL and Black Limousine on Stripped Companion, probably Brixton or Paradiso 1995.

Without any doubt: The solo and the licks on "Heartbreaker" from the official LA Friday. In general the guitar work on the 75/76 is the best what Ronnie did for the Stones. I prefer the YCAGWYW-versions 75/76 with Ronnie to the 72/73 with Mick Taylor. Later on Ronnie played great solos on "Gimme Shelter" 89/90 and on "Beast of Burden" 94/95, sometimes, not always, unfortunately. If he is in good shape he is the best lead guitar player for the Stones I think.

CYHMK from MSG in 2002 was pretty darn good IMO.

Hey Negrita from 76 is sleazy swam rock, sounding like The Faces. When the Whip Comes Down and Just My Imagination from Detroit 78 are stunning. Beast of Burden during the 78 tour is lovely too. Out of Control from the Bridges tour, some great wah wah from Ronnie B' Goode. Heartbreaker from 75. Gimme Shelter Paradiso.

I love his pedal steel on the break of "Whip Comes Down". Unique and groovy.

Beast Of Burden from Live In Texas '78. Everything about that version is perfect to me. I still get chuffed just by looking at the DVD cover.

Was Ronnie's version better than Wayne Perkins on the studio recording? They revived this tune for the Licks tour--was that where you saw it?

His solo on Tumbling Dice from '95 that is on the Wild Horses single. He has done the solo in a simillar way most of the time, but this particular time it was perfect. Also the solo on BOB from Live in Texas '78 is one of his all time best.

I forgot about 'I Wanna Hold You' from Bridges! It's a killer from the St Louis gig.

Dead Flowers on Stripped is pretty good. Black Limo from the single as well. Yeah, Beast Of Burden from Live In Texas.

What about that giant honk he did on YCAGWYW from Love You Live? That's insanely hilarious!

Start Me Up on Flashpoint (even though it's an overdub).

Yeah, I'd say so too. Was surprised when I first heard it and saw the video.

When it ultimately showed up on the official RS site, (and vanished on Youtube), there is actually a reference to it being possibly his best.

I actually like Ronnie's playing straight through Hot Stuff at Knebworth as well, even though the tune nearly falls apart mid way through.

Yes, that was flawless. He really went downhill after that though didn't he?
