The new album’s 11 Hunter originals include such infectious, personally-charged songs as the wry, socially conscious title track, the gently introspective Fatally Flawed, the bittersweet ballad Black Tears, the chugging rocker Wild Bunch, the swaggering I Don’t Know What You Want (which features a guest vocal by Hunter’s son, Jesse) and the vivid, haunting Ta Shunka Witco (Crazy Horse) – all of which showcase the jagged immediacy of Hunter’s one-of-a-kind voice and the punchy authority of his longstanding all-star back-up combo, the Rant Band.

“The songs seem to be more upbeat this time round,” Hunter notes. “The last two albums were pretty political, just because I thought the Bush years were horrible, and thankfully that’s passed. But I don’t go looking for songs; I have to wait for them to come to me. I had a spurt there in the summer of 2011, and that grew into this album. I’d get up every day with something ringing in my head, so I’d try to catch it and get it down. Songwriting’s always been a mystery to me in that way. Now and again you’re nearer the sun, and you have to be ready to capture it.”

Like such recent Hunter releases as Rant (2001), Shrunken Heads (2007) and Man Overboard (2009), When I’m President – his first new recording since Mott The Hoople’s historic 2009 reunion shows at London’s Hammersmith Odeon – looks like it’s gonna rank with some of the iconic frontman’s most impassioned and insightful work. - Classic Rock Magazine

I'm seeing this Friday at the Highline in NYC. Saw him last year with the Rant band in Brooklyn, and he rocked out like it was nobody's business.

Ian Hunter is seriously underrated these days. His recent music is equal to, if not better than anything he did 40 years ago. How many artist of his generation can you say that about?

I've said this before: If "Girl From The Office" had been written and recorded by Paul McCartney, Beatle fans all over the world would be sh*tting themselves, screaming "PAUL is BACK!!"

It's that good.

And yet Hunter keeps putting out this great stuff, to very little acclaim, basically just preaching to the choir, the remnants of his cult.

He deserves better.

Ian deserves better mainstream success, a great artist who works hard, love that he's 73! Someone's else (in the Stones) suggested the path hasn't been tread yet! Watch out Keith! He's treading out front Lol

mother i'm a stranger in a strange land
I feel like an alien
like i'm on the outside lookin' in
I don't seem to fit in
maybe i'm aladdin with a rusty lamp,
the genie never stood a chance
to make all my wishes come true
Here's what i wanna do

i'm gonna lean on the 1%
when i'm president

i wanna 28th amendment
when i'm president

like theives on the holy road
diggin' up the mother lode
like pirates on the open seas
like highway robbery
still whining 'bout your bonus
man up, you're RIDICULOUS
you know ya can't take it with ya
so give a little extra

i'm gonna lean on the 1%
when i'm president
no more bargains in the basement
cause when i'm president
washington
jefferson
watch out baby, cos here i come
abraham - theodore
you're gonna see my ugly mug up on mt. rushmore

you go in with the right intent,
when you become president
you hold those truths to be self-evident
when you become president
but something happens to you up on that hill
and it's business as usual
how do you wanna buck the system?
Welcome to the pit and pendulum

I'm gonna lean on the 1%
when i'm president

I wanna 28th amendment
cause when i'm president

no more bargain basements
cause when i'm president
everything's gonna be different
when i'm president

veto this,
veto that
when i'm president i'll stick it to the fat cats
cross my heart,
hope to die,
when i'm president,
pigs are gonna fly

Ian is vastly underrated by the masses but his career has been one of both longevity and quality. A true rock n roll legend.

New one sounds great!

I expect good stuff every time from Ian, he's been my favourite artist for 40 years, but this album is a cracker. The last two took were (IMO) growers but this is more if an immediate classic. I love it. Can't pick a favourite yet but I do love the wild bunch (they ought to make a movie called the wild bunch)!

Finally listened to the new album - it is great as expected. This is a serious rocker that has done it right thru the years, not resting on his laurels, releasing new stuff consistently, instead of compilations over & over again. Not saying he doesn't have compilation albums but at least he's still writing/releasing new stuff all the time! Another great album: Shrunken Heads!

Looking forward to seeing him in Buffalo at a fundraiser called Feed The City. Great concert and auction of rock swag to benefit the city's food pantry.

Last year was Willie Nile and Jesse Malin. This year Ian. Pure, under-rated rockers.
