I recently stumbled across a smart phone app I'm considering buying called "Cleartune" -- chromatic tuner. Have any of you used this? What gizmos have you liked best for tuning guitars?

I'm of the old school that tunes by ear & I tune to the key I'm in. For instance if I'm in 'G', I get the 3 'G' notes on the 1st, 3rd & 6th strings in tune & then I tune the other strings accordingly. This means that if I go to a song in 'E' I have to retune slightly.
Tuning my Leadbelly style 12-string is another story altogether.

Throw on "I Got The Blues" and tune yourself...

BOSS TU-2 or 3 is the way to go. Excellent tuner. But don't forget the ancient art of tuning by ear!

I use the Boss TU-2 for the electric. For acoustic, both live and at home, I've used an Intellitouch clip-on for years (bought in Denmark Street while in London for a Stones concert - the Astoria, I think).

Both work well. I can tune by ear, but these are quicker and more practical in noisy settings (pubs, other instruments playing, etc). The clip on works by picking up the vibration from the headstock, again great when you're trying to tune in a noisy environment.

My acoustic has a built-in tuner (by far the best way to go if you're a gigging pro). Boss pedal for my strat.

I have a Boss TU-12, I use at home and on stage.

I have a good ear (can sing harmony spontaneously) but I like to have an "objective" mechanism to tune a guitar because I can over think it. I could relate to what Paul McCartney told MUSICIAN MAGAZINE in 1980: "Just to show how wrong one can be, I was in Germany on tour just before REVOLVER came out. I started listening to the album, and I got really down because I thought the whole thing was out of tune. Everyone had to reassure me that it was OK."

use a tuner fastened to the neck... standard tuning

I use the ears first and then check with a tuner if something sounds off...

grand piano. It's a bitch bringing that thing to the cottage, though.

At home I use a Boss TU-12ist type of thing similar to what was posted above except mine is white instead of gray.

On stage & rehearsal I use the Boss TU-3 footpedal as it works great as a tuner or a mute switch.

Also have the gStrings free guitar tuner app on my phone and LOVE it. Works great in a quiet setting and I don't have to bring anything other than my guitar & my phone.
