Elvis On Tour does nothing for me: I get the feeling from it that he's going through the motions, whereas That's The Way It Is is pure incendiary Elvis.

Although completely fantastic, That's The Way It Is is just a moment in time.

This Is Elvis is probably the most accurate portrayal of the Way It Was throughout a career. They don't make it all happy happy all the time. I think they truly showed a man being torn apart by the loneliness of fame and nobody was able to help.

I could do without the theatrical reenactments, but it was a very accurate doc.

@Erik....can't you just catch it on a Norwegian rerun station? I'm not certain you need to own This Is Elvis. Let me just mail you a copy!!!

This Is Elvis highlights how he declined rapidly: it's the visual equivalent of Guralnick's Careless Love.

For me without a shadow of a doubt it has to be the incredible MC5 documentary - A True Testimonial - sadly never officially released because Patti Smith slapped an injunction on it..

Here's a clip. Your tongues'll be hangin' out boys!

The George Harrison - Living in the Material World by Scorcese was very good.
And though it's not a "docu" Almost Famous is one of my all time favorite rock n' roll movies.
Happy Viewing! smoking smiley

An official release of the BBC's 'Cracked Actor' documentary on Bowie that was filmed in 1974 would be most welcome - I've only seen parts of it, fascinating stuff

I agree also with the recommendation that 'The Filth & The Fury' about The Sex Pistols is also a great watch

Dr. Feelgood's 'Oil City Confidential' is supposed to be very good; it's been hard trying to find that one

Re: 'Hail! Hail! Rock 'N' Roll' - Disc 2 in the Collector's edition is a must-see

Assuming you know the usual suspects and "VH1: Behind the Music", there's:

"You're Gonna Miss Me"
"The Howlin' Wolf Story"
"Rock and Roll" ( Late '90s PBS series; FANTASTiC )
"Classic Albums: Jimi Hendrix, Electric Ladyland"
"Wattstax" ( Lesser-known concert doc )
"Fly, Jefferson Airplane"
"The Grey Whistle Test" ( British TV series )
"The Dick Cavett Show" ( Yank TV talk show; Woodstock era to Bowie )
"The Life and Times of The Red Dog Saloon" ( Nevada bar was early psych band hangout; emphasizes The Charlatons )
"Who Is Harry Nilsson ( and Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him? )"
"American Masters: Bob Dylan"

Forgot: Johnny Too Bad, which is about the life and times of John Martyn.

I could also throw in BBC4's documentary about Steve Winwood.

And right now . . right now . . it's time to - Kick out the jams,mxxxx

Kick out and Ramblin Rose with the spoken intro. One of Rock'n Rolls most energetic moments.
And that was 68! The Stooges and MC5 in those days - unbelievable!
I'd love to see the docu. Is it available somewhere?

Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story is absolutely phenomenal.

No Direction Home, Beatles Anthology, and Petty: Runnin' Down A Dream are also top-notch.

Oh, and forgot about the Clash's Westway To The World - that too is amazing.

It wasnt Patti Smith - she had nothing to do with the film - it was Wayne Kramer who slapped an injunction on it..

Quote: Plaintiff Wayne Kramer was a leader of the band and now joins with other plaintiffs as he seeks damages for copyright infringement, breach of contract, fraud, and related claims. Kramer argues he was assigned the rights to the song Poison, and claims the use of Poison in the Film creates a copyright infringement

here's the link for the legal hassle with the film:

Brian Wilson Songwriter 1962-1969

1. Spinal Tap - best documentary about a band that never existed

2. Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story: perfect lampoon of so much, from Johnny Cash to Dylan to Brian Wilson and the run of musicians trying to cross-over into US TV variety shows in the 70s. Great performance by Jack White as Elvis.

Real documentaries? Oh....The Kids Are Alright is my fav. Just a great overview of the band and their personality.

So glad someone mentioned this. One of my favorites ever. It Might Get Loud features Jack White, The Edge and Jimmy Page, three generations of rock legends, the youngest clearly in awe of the eldest. Great stuff.

One that's near to my heart is Athens, GA : Inside/Out. Takes a look at the unique music scene in Athens that spawned some great bands like REM, The B-52's, Pylon, Love Tractor and more. It has some flaws, but it's worth a look.
