Long Long While
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, March 6 - 9, 1966

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - tambourine
Ian Stewart - organ
Jack Nitzsche - piano

Baby, baby, been a long, long time, been a long, long time
Been a long, long time, I was wrong girl and you were right
Baby, baby, took a long, long while, took a long, long while
Took a long, long while, but I found out you were right

Still you have those happy eyes, I will try and apologize

Baby, baby, still the same old smile, still the same old smile
Still the same old smile, I was so wrong, babe and you were right

Still you have those happy eyes, yes, I, I'm gonna try, I'm gonna try and apologize, oh

Baby, baby, been a long, long time, been a long, long time
Been a long, long time, I was wrong girl and you were right, oh

Baby, baby, won't you change your mind, won't you change your mind
Won't you change your mind, I was wrong girl, but not this, no, I, I said
Baby, baby, been a long, long time
It's been such a long and lonely time, girl
It's been such a long, a long, long time
I was wrong, but I admit, I admit you were right, oh
Come on now, baby, baby, I just want to change your mind
I wanted to change your mind, baby, I wanted to come on and change your mind
I was wrong, I, I, I, oh

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Paint It Black / Long Long While” 7” single
(Decca F 12395) UK, May 13, 1966

Keith had to do both guitar parts? Brian could have handled the electric guitar soloing more deftly. Why couldn't Mick do the tambourine part? They did the vocal track separately by then, what was Mick doing during the recording of the instrumental track, standing in the control room smoking? Great track, just should have had Brian on electric guitar and Keith on acoustic for that live, rather than overdubbed, feel...

He never really played an electric guitar solo without the bottleneck.

Also, from the mid 60s, he played less guitar and focused more on other instruments.

Yes, apparently so. I've looked up line-up configurations from the timeisonourside site to try and prove you wrong, but I can't find one example. I Just Want To make Love To You, Tell me, You Can Make It If You Try, Empty Heart, It's All Over Now, You Can't Catch Me, Heart Of Stone, Pain In My Heart, If You Need Me, 2120 South Michigan Avenue--if he wasn't playing harmonica, he was playing a lot of tambourine or a bit of undistinguished rhythm...for the overall Stones sound, he was really not an indispensable member and was ultimately the least Stones-sounding of them all. Now Mick Taylor, well there's a guitar player whose sound and imprint you could miss...

Yeah, but his tremolo rhythm-playing (Mona and others) was quite tasty and important for the sound, at least for a while. I'm not sure if Brian plays guitar on Tell Me, though, but I see some websites give him credit here.

On Aftermath, Buttons and Satanic (and the singles from that era) he certainly was an indispensable member - but on other instruments, imo.

A real underrated soul pop gem of a song. They wrote so many of these kind of songs that other bands would have killed for to release as A sides. Ride On Baby, Play With Fire and Congratulations are others that spring to mind.

Jagger's vocal is reminiscent of his performance on That's How Strong My Love Is. Great, impassioned blue eyed soul.

I'm not a big fan of this era of the Stones, but this one's okay.

Totally agree, Mick's vocals are perfectly suited for this nicely written and performed song. Likin' it thumbs up.

great track, with a sense of mystery and longing to it. Achieves a more epic feeling than the writing of the song would suggest, through the performance and recording.

Featured in Casino (or was it Goodfellas?). I think it's when Joe Pesci stabs the guy in the neck with a pen.

It's Casino. I never would have thought to score this song to violence, but that's why Marty is Marty.

I love this song. Seriously in my top 20 Stones songs of all time list. Wish a stereo version was available. Come on ABKCO. I'm ready to buy.

Even though I feel the song rooting for Otis Redding direction, the song sounds nicely original - a soulful tune with a personal touch. Performancewise it is Jagger's show. Damn, the young Jagger is able to express angst and anger with fine nuances better than no one ever. This is the first time I am able to read the lyrics - there is almost nothing there, but Jagger makes them alive and contentfully richer.

The song belongs to an era when Mick and Keith still sound like being excited of being able to create melodical 'proper' songs just like that. There is that certain free-going inspirational spirit in those AFTERMÁTH era sessions and songs. The songs sound so fresh, natural and innocent musically. Sometimes charmingly naive.

I had it in NO STONE UNTURNED collection - an album which was almost a holy grail for a completist, at least during the early 80's.

No Stone Unturned is one hell of an album. It was derided at the time but has proved to be a worthy album.

Sorry - post edited because I just realised that I'm not the first person to note that it was used (why on earth?) for a violent scene in "Casino".

Early on in Mick and Keith's songwriting career, they were clearly trying to produce the same kind of songs they had already been covering - and this is a pretty good effort in the "Time Is On Our Side" vein, with an outstanding vocal from Mick. Personally I like this better than TIOOS. Perhaps they should have tried it as a single - I think it might have been a hit in the US where their slower songs were always popular.

If I have one criticism, I think it's just a bit repetitive - could do with a proper bridge...
