Interesting writing, and you go into nice detail.
I think I would use less 'opinion' and more unbiased ideas.
This line is absolutely false:
Not only the lowspot of Goats Head Soup, but one of the worst songs ever recorded by the Stones.
I couldn't disagree more.

It is no wonder that Angie was chosen as a single. IMO the tracks chosen are well chosen. Through the lonely nights is charming, but not significant, and criss-cross is phantastic, but too similar (and slightly infirior) to Heartbreaker.

It's actually Silver Train, not Heartbreaker, that Criss Cross is similar to. And Criss Cross is the better of the two songs, although I do like Silver Train just fine.
It is hugely unfortunate that Atlantic Records chose Angie as the single to promote (yet alone that it was on the album instead of Through The Lonely Nights). Although it is a brilliant song etc it is way too saccharin and schmaltzy production wise. Angie is one of the reasons GHS is deemed inferior to Exile - because how could a band that made Exile make such fluff as Angie? The Stones that made Beggars-Exile cease to exist on this album, which is fine, change was inevitable. It's still a fantastic album and one of my faves. But it does reveal a band that is heading in different directions.

I love the entire album, and dearly wish it could be reissued as a deluxe double.

But IMO the daring and interesting thing about GHS is the emphasis on the softer material. What makes GHS special is that is it is the first record not fuelled by rockers like Gimme Shelter, Sympathy or Brown Sugar. The greatness of GHS lies in the ballads.

What I love about Angie is the way it sounds like a sugary love song, and when you actually listen to the words learn, thatis beneath all that sweet talk, there is a cruelty. The "I" has from the beginning decided to leave the "you" and still evokes and declares dephts of his and their love. There is never any doubt that he will leave, but he still carries on with his fake-caring and what he loves is her tears for him. It's the seducers song to the seduced. And a warning not just to listen to the sugary surface. A seducing warning against the seducer from the seducer himself.

Angie IS a masterpiece.

I have been asked to do a track-by-track commentary on GHS, this to be used in a forthcoming Rolling Stones app.

My first draft an be found here:

I would be very grateful for any feedback from this board - it would be very helpful to know if I have got any of my facts wrong, but I would also be most interested to know whether my opinions are shared by others.
Thanks in advance

Maybe it puts you in a stupor, so it feels like you're stoned a little bit, so you get the munchies?
