Did Mason really play acoustic guitar on Dear Doctor?

He isncredited in Bill's, Rolling With The Stones as playing acoustic guitar. I asked Dave about it and told him of this credit and he said...

"I think Bill is right."

If he did it must have been some kind of subtle, additional guitar. I only hear one though and that is obviously Keith playing it.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Quite possibly my favourite Stones album...... And its up against some stiff competion from an incredible era. Theres not a song on it that I ever skip, even the songs that didnt make the album are worthy.

My favourite track being No expectations....... will be played at my funeral.

What a drag it is gettin' old

Then it would have to be something like the brilliant bootleg R.S.V.P.

Yes truly great! The influences from Dylan are clear. But Stones makes the field their own. Godard's movie shows for instance how Sympathy grew from being a Dylan-pastische into complete magnificence. The only weak spot is Salt of the earth. Stray Cat Blues, which MJ said is influence by Velvet Underground, is a classic too.

One of their best, almost perfect. But I would prefer SFTD with a little more "flesh", more guitars, the version of BB works on me somewhat "down-stripped". Never understood why they edited or rather cut the acoustic rhythm guitar out by Brian.

Judging by One Plus One footage they probably had to as he moved back and forth from the mic, missed chord changes etc during takes.

Those lyrics really are better.

Through The Looking Glass: Child Of The Moon

Officially released as the B side of Jumpin' Jack Flash in May 1968, the earliest known and available to listen to attempts at recording Child Of The Moon can be found on the Midnight Beat - Satanic Sessions bootleg double box sets. The majority of the set covers recordings from 1967, but there are exceptions in the form of 3 takes of Child of the Moon(takes 10 - 12) and 14 takes of Jigsaw Puzzle(takes 1 - 14), both dating from the spring 1968 sessions for Beggars Banquet.

The early live takes of Child of the Moon are interesting due to their stripped down sound, more laid back feel and alternate arrangement when compared to the officially released version.

The line up for the 3 takes are:
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar(tuned to open D)
Nicky Hopkins - piano
Charlie Watts - drums(using brushes)
(Unidentified musician)??? - electric piano(probably a Hohner Pianet N)

Child of the Moon: takes 10 - 12.

Moving on to the officially released version finds Child Of The Moon cast in a more tougher, electric arrangement. The mix featured below is missing the lead vocal, but features the wonderful backing vocals. The line up for this version and the fully completed version is most likely...

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar(tuned to open D), vocals
Brian Jones - soprano saxophone
Bill Wyman - bass guitar(with fuzz/distortion effect)
Charlie Watts - drums
Nicky Hopkins - piano, organ.

It's worth noting that the electric piano line featured in the early takes appears as the bass line in the electric version. So perhaps it is Bill who plays the electric piano in those early takes.

Child Of The Moon: Backing Vocal Mix

Here is a short review and an article from around the time of realease of the Jumpin' Jack Flash/Child Of The Moon single. Interesting that Brian initially preffered Child Of The Moon to Jumpin' Jack Flash and that Mick considers Child Of The Moon the more original of the two songs.

Wow - you think "Salt of the Earth" is a weak spot?

At a time when Bill's work is getting long overdue credit, shouldn't we add another wonderful outtake?

I love it...but I love "Dear Doctor" more.

The available song as found on numerous bootlegs and Metamorphosis is from Spring 1969, the alleged versions from 1968, which I have doubts about, have never surfaced. That track belongs in Let It Bleed thread.
