....My question is, how many of you can actually define "swing"?

I'll take a shot at it....Charlie Watts
That's not a definition. All you said was the name of a drummer.

How dare the Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire play these songs with their own style and interpretation!! Artistic choice sucks!!

How dare those who thought the version of IORR kind of sucked, express their artistic choice and preference.

True enough, that's all I did.

This is another way: a rhythmic style that involves elongating the first of a pair of consecutive eighth notes, and accenting the second of the two.
The rhythm is derived from subdividing a quarter note into three equal parts (a triplet) rather than into an even number of parts.
Therefore, swung eighth notes are not really eighth notes, but two legs of a triplet tied together, and the third articulated.

I prefer the original shot I took at it.

(Slightly off-topic) Those of you who have a couple of bucks to spare may be interested in purchasing this Warhol print of the hero of the day, the Jaggster, the Jaggeroo. Or you can print out a copy yourselves. (Warhol would have approved.)

So many people toss around the "it doesn't swing" excuse for saying something isn't good, but is it really understood what it means? Do you truly understand that definition that you copied and pasted?

I know what you mean, I'd have to think about it.
I guess to me it means drumming slightly behind the beat, sort of "playing with time" as one drummer put it to me years ago. Playing "in the pocket", pulling back more then pushing forward.
One thing I am sure of.....I know it when I hear it.

It's almost sad to see how energized Mick was with other musicians, playing a song that I thought he must be totally BORED WITH...but alas, with the FF he brought a whole new ( or OLD) interpretation to....I guess it would have to be the old, original interpretation that they played, and it did SMOKE! YIKES! Imagine an entire concert with Mick fronting a different band for each Stones song...SWAY could actually song great! Can you imagine a tune like " Connection" or " She Smiled Sweetly" with Arcade Fire?? Or Loving Cup done over? It would be exciting, and that might be what Mick was trying to illustrate.

It was downright enlightening wasn't it?
I love Keith and ROnnie, but the FF and AF guys have that hunger still and you could see it when they played. It was exhilarating watching and hearing Mick feed off that enthusiasm and energy.
jamesdouglas is right:
Maybe Mick is the relevant one. He just needs a backup band who still gives a shit or one that doesn't drags him down... (ie..Dave Stewart and such)
This version of IORR was better than any I've seen the Stones do. It sounded urgent and Jagger's voice was strong and forceful and charismatic. It brought the song - lyrics and music - back from oldies purgatory and made it seem angry again.
If SNL proved anything, its that Mick is not the problem with the Stones.
Keef's desciples are going find every reason to diss this, but Mick was @#$%& Mick.Jagger.

I agree with stupid. (Sorry, had to say that!) I also think the Stones could do a great show, albeit Vegas-like, with many guests... Maybe they tour with AF and the FFs and have sort of a variety of musicians on stage at any given time... Sometimes it's the bare-bones Stones, sometimes it's AF with Mick, some songs with MT on guitar, etc. They can still put on a great, high energy show, they just might have to think outside the box to make it happen.

Dear Mick, ditch the Stones and go solo.

hmm, has he not tried that already a few times?

WOW! I can not believe that people found that IORR by FF & Mick to be anything less than stellar -- and vital -- but opinions differ so be it.

I did notice one critic mention the lack of a piano being a problem.

Do you want Chuck Leavell to play it and some guitar parts ? LOL!

And I am not a CL complainer, usually.

I'm a big "Solo Mick" critic.

BUT... I would pay money to see that performance with that band.

I thought it defintely had something.
