"Its Only Rock n' Roll" with the Foo Fighters TRULY FANTASTIC
Posted by: guyrachel ()

Have not heard Mick sing with this much commitment or passion for YEARS, it's wonderful to hear Jagger sing the song in its "original" arrangement, high notes, quiet sections, change in tempos, and to hear the full blooded cynicism that the song can deliver.

Who was the musical director on these?

Also loved the other performances!

Wish he would tackle the Stones in the same way!

I loved it too. It was the first time I've ever heard them play it so true to the record. Not that it's bad when they don't; it's jus such a different beast in this iteration.

I wonder if Mick cares about playing with the Stones at all, really? Seems like he's the one that really wants to keep the music alive...

I agree. Loved the arrangement.

Reminded me of how the Foos improved "Band On the Run" when they played the McCartney tribute at the White House.

I'm not a big fan of either song (or the Foos for that matter ) but they really kicked it up a notch in both cases.

TRULY FANTASTIC I wouldn't go that far but it's certainly enjoyable.

Watch it a 2nd time and concentrate on the drummer only. smiling bouncing smiley

Watch it a 3rd time and concentrate on the drummer's teeth grinning smiley

I loved it. Have seen it twice. I DVR'ed it so will be watching it again (and again!).

Martin Scorsese said when he used to see Robert De Niro in other directors' movies he'd get jealous, "That's my actor." I wonder if Keith got a little jealous watching Mick do Stones songs with Foo Fire.

Really? I thought it was cheesy. The Last Time was a bit interesting, but the others were kind of weak.

When I was watching the show live I dug The Arcade Fire segment way more than the FF. re-watching it I am liking the FF segment a whole lot more. Jagger tears it up on IORR.
It's got to be just out of this world for someone like Grohl and Taylor do play a song like this with Mick Jagger. How many times have bands played IORR, or JJF in dusty rehearsal basements?

Always hated Keith's double stop live intro for It's only rock and roll. FF did it like the studio version. Even the lead was like the original. Loved it.

Really liked the studio flavor version done live!
The typical live version seems rushed and looses range and subtlety of the studio version

I thought it was OK but Grohl sucks as a guitar player and he can't sing. Should have stuck witht he drums.

Yup! I agree. Wish someone would tell him. He's a terrible guitarist.

Pretty good, they took all that time getting the original version down but didn't do the ending justice. One of the things that keeps me listening to the original is how, after the repeated "only rock and roll, but..." the songs sounds like it's going to come apart. Drums in one groove, acoustic guitar in another, etc, and then comes together with the piano licks and then, a measure later, a simple three-hit drum roll that brings them all together. Gets me every time, after all these years.

'it's wonderful to hear Jagger sing the song in its "original" arrangement'

My sentiments exactly. The songs in their original, un-watered-down arrangements, plus the obvious enthusiasm of the backing band, made it quite a moving experience.

(And I absolutely loved the exhilarating performance of the Strokes' bass player.)

I can't stand the Foos. Yet... that versions was muthafuhckin' SMOKIN' rockin'.

And in the original key.

Best thing Mick's done live in quite some time possibly, next to whatever on the Bridges tour, Out Of Control and a few others.

I loved the solo by whatever his name is on the FF - ripped intensely with teeth on a Tele like it was meant to be played (and sadly has not been the last few times I've seen it live)

Yup I am not a fan of the Foo's but this was spectacular. I am also not a fan of medlies, but it worked great! Jagger was fantastic and totally into it. Great to seeing in light that he has sung that song millions of times, but it sounded fresh and new. Great!

Too bad the Stones can't play it like that anymore.

I still prefer it in B. And Foo Fighters just don't do it for me.

Dave Grohl is an awesome drummer, but a complete pretender as a band leader. Think Phil Collins with tats and hair.

Why do you prefer it in B?

And even when he's taking a shit Dave Grohl is cooler than Phil Collins.

Just had another look - and I still prefer 19th Nervous Breakdown. Maybe the "younger" Stones song suits a heavy rock band better? I don't know, but that part was good to hear, and I wish they hadn't cut it short to get into IORR. Anyway, it's interesting to hear the Foos' take on both songs. They aren't my favourite band (one of those I'd like to like, but don't), and IORR is far from my favourite Stones song, but it was a great cover, and clearly both they and Mick enjoyed it. Nice to know that whatever happens to the Stones personally, the music is alive and well and rocking the house, and probably will be for a long time to come!

I saw a nice kind of chemistry between Mick and the band. They appeared to be enjoying themselves
with these great songs and their enthusiasm infected me. I was quite amazed to see a band perform
these songs so close to the original and NOT become a slave to a note by note delivery.
The performance had a very natural atmosphere, the artists playing relaxed, yet very focused.
I liked it, yes I did.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away
