Exlie songs without Taylor
Posted by: TravelinMan ()
Date: May 17, 2012 18:41

I read this earlier and it came to my attention Taylor doesn't play on Let it Loose. I can't hear anything specifically Taylor in that song and I don't have the liner notes right now to confirm. I was wondering what other songs on the album he isn't featured on. Happy, for instance, I remember in the booklet it says he plays, but that's another song where I can't pick out anything uniquely him.

There is a great section in the site www.timeisonourside.com called Track Talk. There you can find excellent notes about all the songs on Exile, who played what, when and where the songs were recorded , etc. Along with Rene's wonderful Track Talk threads you should be able to easily find all the information you are looking for regarding MT's contributions. Good Luck. peace

Taylor is absent on:

Torn & Frayed
Sweet Black Angel
Loving Cup
I Just Want To See His Face
Let It Loose

He also plays bass instead of guitar on Tumbling Dice.

I checked the site and Jagger says I just Wanna See His Face was a jam with Watts and Taylor on bass, but it lists two basses, LOL.

Yeah, not much going on guitar-wise on some of those like Loving Cup. Although, on the Vancouver '72 version Taylor throws some nice licks in. Speaking of that Vancouver show, Taylor is smokin' on Torn and Frayed.

Taylor absolutely plays bass on Torn & Frayed.

I don't know about SBA

Yeah, I've always loved the Vancouver Torn & Frayed performance (along with the trainwreck "do-over!" of Midnight Rambler!).

Sometimes I sorta wish they would've kept Torn & Frayed in the setlist in '72.

Does he really not play on Loving Cup? On the Stones in Exile DVD you can hear them discussing Loving Cup and when each of them should come in. Keith says "when you feel it Mick" or something like that - and presumably he's talking to Taylor and when to come in. But besides that, I always thought that 2nd guitar (i.e. the electric) that kicks in at about 00:56 sounds like Taylor to my ears, especially those little descending runs in between the verses? This is news to me that it isn't Taylor..

thumbs up Me too! Same goes for Ventilator blues. And if you listen to the rehearsal takes of Key to the highway (yes, I am aware that it's a cover) you wish they had included one of those slow numbers in each show.

Hey champ72 that is a great observation. I "heard it" that way too, thought it must be MT he's talkin to but maybe not. We forget MJ plays a pretty good guitar too but presumbably not good enough to be allowed the "when you feel it" from Keith. I have to believe based on that that he just might have played on that tune. Maybe they didn't end up using his part? Who knows? anyone? peace

No, it's not. It's the "probable lineup" from timeisonourside.com.

However, it IS undisputably correct that Keith plays the electric guitar on Loving Cup. That, I can tell after listening to the man for over 30 years smiling smiley

It's funny how different ears hear different things, I would have sworn on my left nut that it was Taylor. And perhaps I would have lost that bet and now I'd be swimming round in circles!! I shall listen to it again but those little descending runs sound Taylor-esque to me. We need to ask MT or KR really....or Andy Johns may know. But I suppose that if it was recorded in L.A. and I read somewhere that MT wasn't there, then I guess it couldn't be him. But I'm still not 100% convinced!!

They could have been, but if you listen closely, you'll find that they are a little "off", in the way that Keith does - and in the way that Taylor almost never does. There are a few downright mistakes in there as well.

I too think it's Keith. I'm fairly experienced in hearing him and Mick T, and I listened quite carefully to check now.

In my opinion, it could be Taylor, but I still think it's Keith, because it's a little too restrained to be Mick, who would have played a little more varied, probably adding more leady licks and playing with more slickness. The guitar part is tight and well played -- Keith has certainly played things choppier and more out of pitch than that -- but still hard enough to be Keith more than Taylor IMHO.

There's no Taylor on Loving Cup.

It seems that the tracks that where recorded in LA do not feature Taylor on guitar at all -it seems he was absent for most of the sessions as a guitarist, but did some bass overdubs.

And this actually for me leads to a basic question concerning the sessions -who where present in LA from december 71 to March 72? The story always was that only Jagger and Richards where in LA. Then Wyman added that he and Watts spend three weeks in December 71 in LA. It does seem that Taylor was largely absent from the LA overdub sessions. None of the tracks recorded there feature him (Loving Cup, Turd on the Run etc), and his overdubs seem to be limited to bass. On the tracks he did record with them at Nellcote and Stargroves he's only featured minimaly (except Stop Breaking Down). Rocks Off for example only has Taylor in the intro and outro, and all other guitars are Richards, his parts where wiped (as they where on RTJ).

The same with the brass section -I understand they where all fully recorded at Nellcote, and that Keys and Price where not present in LA. This means that for example for Let It Loose the basic take most probably was done at Olympics, brass at Nellcote, vocals in LA.

Somehow, perhaps, but there are mistakes here.

For instance, Taylor doesn't play on Happy:

That happened in one grand bash in France for Exile. I had the riff. The rest of the Stones were late for one reason or another. It was only Bobby Keys there and Jimmy Miller, who was producing. I said, I've got this idea; let's put it down for when the guys arrive. I put down some guitar and vocal, Bobby was on baritone sax and Jimmy was on drums. We listened to it, and I said, I can put another guitar there and a bass. By the time the Stones arrived, we'd cut it. I love it when they drip off the end of the fingers. And I was pretty happy about it, which is why it ended up being called Happy.

Stop Breaking Down was recorded at Olympic in 1970. The pics of the 2 Mick's playing guitar together in Olympic probably come from that session.

I doubt any tracks were started from scratch in LA, isn't it the case that those were overdub and mixing sessions only?
