late era songs that would've been radio classics if released in the 70's

I am conviced these would be considered "classics" if they were, for example, on Goat's Head Soup instead of a later record

1. One Hit to the Body
2. Slipping Away
3. No Mistake* (would like to hear Mick singing this with Sarah Dash)
4. Don't Tear Me Up*
5. Highwire
6. Don't Stop
7. Undercover
8. Too Much Blood
9. Old Habits Die Hard*
10. Charmed Life*
11. Almost Hear You Sigh

*solo tracks that could have been/should have been Stones songs

Saint of Me, Continental Drift, Laugh, I Nearly Died, Plundered My Soul.

And even Streets of Love, though I'm glad it didn't come out as a 70s hit and start a fashion for lots more like it.

The latter day tracks are not classics because they are not classics. Would they have been released in the 70's the Stones would have disappeared from the scene, just like most bands disappeared when the quality dropped after a couple of good albums. The only reason why the Stones could do the major tours of the 90’s and 00’s is because they are an institution. It certainly wasn’t due to the quality of studio material released.

I still think Love Is Strong would have been a hit in the 70s.

Although maybe not a hit, How Can I Stop would have been popular as well, imo.

There are very few Rock Classics since middle 80s.
Love is strong and other tunes could have been classics in the 70S
I am sure
Pink Floyds's Division Bell could be an absolutely classic album if it were release in 1977 instead 1994

David Bowie's Heathe could be a classic album if it should be released in the 70's

An impossible question to answer. Some posters seem to live in the blue though. The truth is that they haven't written a classic since "Start me Up". To declare anything else is just wishful thinking. None of Keith's or Mick's solo tracks are classics. Basta!

I think, with time, there will be some classics from the late era as well:

I still always think that Waiting On A Friend was their last classic song. When I think of a Stones classic, I think of Shelter, Sympathy, Monkey man etc... Nothing from their latter day work compares. That being said, I still think they have made some very good songs since Undercover:

Take It So Hard
Too Tough
Blinded By Love
You Got Me Rockin'
Plundered My Soul
Too Tight
The entire Wandering Spirit album

OUT OF TEARS
ROUGH JUSTICE
SHE WAS HOT
ALREADY OVER ME
THEIF IN THE NIGHT
SHE SAW ME COMING
LET ME DOWN SLOW
FLIP THE SWITCH
OUT OF CONTROL
....there's more...

Good point...

But it is not possible to know wether these songs would have reached the status of classics.

More importantly (and also impossible to know). would the official classics have been acknowledged as such if they would have been released during the last decade for example?.....I think that no, they would not.

It's a hypothetical situation, we'll never really know. But it's worth considering that many songs are a product of the time - the musical trends and style of production, the recording technology and equipment in use at the time, as well as the songwriting (which is influenced by musical trends). The Stones always wanted to be commercial so that often had to go with what the public wanted. The Stones' style of rock/blues/r&b was in fashion in the 60s, since then it was not. They tried to follow the early 70s funk sound but eventually couldn't keep pace whilst musical styles spread in different directions throughout the 70s and beyond. The late 70s punk and disco era was the last time the Stones were back in tune again before losing it again in the 80s and beyond.

I think what I'm trying to say is that many if not most songs could only have been written in the era they were released. JJF, HTW, SFTD etc, could not have been written and recorded exactly as we know them but in 2012.

True, but the last... let's say twenty years... I'm also almost everytime amazed what song(s) "they" (recordcompany?) have chosen to be the new/next singel. I mean songs like Terrifiying, Sexdrive, Out of control, Rain comes down and Biggest Mistake.
you know for sure that's not gonna be a hit!

I'm told that Hot Stuff got a lot of radio play in '76. If it were released today, it would suffer the same chart fate as Rough Justice.
