I'm selling my music collection -any help appreciated-added pics
Posted by: snibbs1234 ()
Date: May 6, 2012 00:59

Hi All,
I've decided to sell my entire music collection,( i'm in Australia)
After 40 years of collecting vinyl, books, mags, memorabillia,cd's,boots, tickets etc.
i'm selling, so if anyone on here has any advise i'd appreciate it.
i know what i paid for all of it and what i beleive they are worth, been to many a fair in my time ,bought & sold on ebay etc.
i'm doing a garage sale advertising it as a 1 man record fair & collectables.
but with the numerous experts on here any input would be truly greatful.
i've included a few pix's.mainly stones of course.
i'm thinking of setting my price's at $5.00 per LP, $2.00 per 45'S,
$20.00 per vivnl boot ,and what about all my downloaded boots with cover's,should i sell em or keep that underwraps.and i'm going to be fair with my pricing for books & concert programmes, pics, posters etc.
cheers
Sean

I would suggest that you don't charge a flat rate for each item. I would imagine that some of your albums are worth a lot more than $5. Similarly, $2 for a 45 sounds a giveaway. I think you would be much better off putting them on ebay. You could start them at low prices to attract buyers. You tend to find that each items finds somewhere near it's true value.

when I want to sell items I know the value of and what I want to get for them I always wait for a free listing weekend on eBay, that way if you dont sell, you're not charged. They can always be relisted the next free listing weekend, generally there is one a month, sometimes two. It depends how quickly you want to sell.

You could also do a private list on sites such as this on a first come first served basis. I'm sure there'll be folk out here with gaps in their collections!

Ditto, the way to do it. Probably a hell of a job but worth it! Fly in Matt to check Stones, Faces, Ronnie as well. Or mail the photos. Hate some rare stuff ending up "never to be seen again".

Indeed, you're cheap on 45s, which look good, and you're too expensive on the boots. Their value was mostly in the recordings, but all can be downloaded from the internet these days. The 45s though, and the original vinyls....

Okay, since I'm sure others are curious, I'll ask. Not to pry, but why are you selling?

20 dollars for bootleg LP's is too little, I see that you have legendary titles like "Claudine- accidents will happen.
You can sell it on Ebay for maybe 80 dollars, or more, if it is in exellent/mint condition.

I think you've gotten some good advice here...

Generally, $20 for bootlegs seems high, although there are probably some exceptions as has been noted.

$5 and $2 for legit releases generally seems low, especially if they are in great condition, or if you have any sealed albums.

Just be prepared to get less than what you paid for some things. With the advent of eBay, prices have dropped on many items. Pre eBay, many things were 'rare'. Now you can find dozens of them online. Pre eBay I paid $100 for the Japanese Brown Sugar 'Hammock' sleeve. Had never seen one. Now it's $50. Ouch!

Not sure about the rest of the world, but in the U.S. these days ebay is letting you do 50 free auctions per month, so if the stuff does not sell, you pay nothing, but your time... and hassles of dealing with all (which is no small price)

Snibs1234, you've gotten some helpful advice above.
I'd like to add my two cents worth!

1. Go for the big bucks items first. You'll hate yourself if you don't. Try to sell these to someone who is thrilled to buy them -- as opposed to "re-sellers."

2. Be very careful about getting rid of all vinyl. When I downsized all my stuff, including Stones items, I bid good bye to a few things I still mourn.
HOW could I have gotten rid of the UK first pressing of High Tides Green Grass or my program for Royal Albert Hall September 1966 or my personal invitation to the Hyde Park concert?

In other words, save shelf or drawer for items that simply bring back early memories that you cherish.

As i thought the advise on here is truly grateful.
one question "why" , i've been bitten by a bug called Ancestry, my life is consummed on doing my family tree, i have to get back home to England and seek rellies including my 90 year uncle, and to Ireland where it all started.
i'm only doing it because it's all i have of any value and you can't take it with you when your gone.
so thanks again for all the help, with prices etc, and i will send an email to those who asked
cheers

Sean

For this EXACT reason, I am afraid to get rid of any vinyl. Thanks for your reminder that in the haste to make money, one may sell something that will cause years of regret.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

Sean, have you got any rare photos or magazines that Rockman may not have?
He does so much for us here -- can you find him a small treasure? Something early and cool. I'll pay for it.
