CORRECTION--KEITH: "This one is for Meredith" [Oakland Nov 14, 1997 show]
Posted by: swiss ()
Date: May 2, 2012 07:39

hi

NOTE: My original post below was incorrect--the concert at which Keith said: "This one is for Meredith" was Nov 14, 1997, Oakland Coliseum

Someone mentioned in passing to me---someone I don't know and can't easily circle back with---that he was
at one of the Voodoo Lounge Oakland Collesium shows in October 1994, and
that before playing during the "outro wash of" some song,
Keith announced: "This one is for Meredith."

1) can anyone confirm that Keith said that?

2) which show was it at? (Oct. 26, 28, 29, or 31)

3) which song?

4) does anyone know whether this appears on any of the "boots" of the show?

thanks for any info on this!

yo! Does no one have the bootlegs to any of the Oakland '94 concerts?

I will try to get in touch with this guy who told me that Keith said "This one is
for Meredith" at one of these concerts -- and maybe that will help narrow down
the dates.

The one comment I've read Keith say is that the guy was in idiot to bring a gun to a rock concert.

He was fond of saying "This one goes like this" during that period. Maybe Keith's comment was misheard?

hi again

I got in touch with the guy who mentioned that Keith announced in a show: "This
one is for Meredith."

The concert in question was actually Nov 14, 1997, Oakland Coliseum.

The guy who told me this had seats very close to the front. He doesn't remember
which song it was, but said it was "during the outro wash of" some song. And that
Keith didn't shout it out, but announced it as sort of an "aside."

1) can anyone confirm that Keith said that?

2) which song?

3) does anyone know whether this appears on any of the "boots" of the show?

thanks -=-again-=- for any info on this!

The SF Chronicle, alternative press and Oakland press would surely have made mention of this at the time.

Not necessarily. The reporter would have had to heard him say it. I was there and I didn't. I'll check my copy of the show.

Thanks, Stones62 - really appreciate it! smiling smiley

As this guy said, Keith didn't bellow it out to the crowd, waving his arms. But rather,
"Keith was clearly doing it quietly, making a statement but not drawing attention to it."

In other words, Keith said it as an aside, the way he does sometimes.

Although it's not likely this fellow is fabricating, one person's account isn't "worth much,"
clearly, and needs to be corroborated (that's what I'm doing). As we know, the details
and nuances of history often aren't captured entirely by official or mainstream sources.

thanks again!

Stones62, I spoke with the guy this evening. He said he was in the 3rd row, near Keith, and
whatever song it was (he doesn't remember which it was) was winding down, and still lots
of playing going on, and Keith went up to the mic, and said "This one's for you, Meredith."

Incidentally, re: the local media at the time--3 pieces about this show in the San Francisco Examiner,
and 3 stories in the San Francisco Chronicle--the stories tend, almost exclusively, toward the
scene that surrounding the show, and the spectacle of the show, rather than on the music itself, or,
aside from the obvious theatrics, what was going on on-stage. It challenging not to focus on the above,
but--with that said--it would not be inconceivable something like Keith's making a side dedication
to Meredith Hunter could be missed. In focusing on the grander elements, errors were made.

For example--one I caught today--Joel Selvin of the Chronicle reported confidently that the
Stones played "Ruby Tuesday" that night, when in fact...they didn't.

We'll see...I'm not gunning for anything. I do think it would be super interesting if Keith did say
this, and if there is any credible second source beyond the one fellow who mentioned it to me.

According to this site, those shows happened in October. The only song in the set list that might apply to Meredith would probably be Heartbreaker, which was (according to IORR) performed on three of the four nights.

Thanks, Send It To Me. However, you might want to check on those dates again.

Click here for BV's list of concerts in 1997.

This is what it says:

Send It To Me:

I am talking about the November 14, 1997 show at Oakland Coliseum. My first post---which I have crossed out---said 1994. That was a mistake as I've posted a couple of places on this thread.

thanks

Rockman's probably too modest to mention it, and I hope he doesnt mind me doing so, but lets just say that he put together a collection of music for Keith to listen to and Keith namechecked him onstage and thanked him for 'laying it on me'.

Swiss, - doesn't your friend remember whether it was during one of Keith' songs?
Would make it easier.

Must be. He usually doesn't talk during the songs Mick sings...

November 14th: All About You and Wanna Hold You.
