OT: What is the best city for music ?

Got the idea from this article: [www.guardian.co.uk] but I'm not going to sign up & log in there.

Of course, I say New Orleans.

Lots of great artists from here and you can't walk very far without coming across a music club.

Got Jazz Fest going next two weekends!

New York City

Many sided question there EG, I'd say for entertainment New York City, still.

For inspiration, probably New Orleans, Austin TX, or Americana gems found around most college towns across the USA, like Santa Cruz, CA, Columbia, MO and
Ann Arbor MI, and Ashville SC The breeding ground for such bands like Wilco and Son Volt.

For recording and production without a doubt Nashville followed by Los Angeles. Los Angeles leads in the Music for Film category. peace

What about Memphis.

Let's break it down:

In the 50s it was Roscoe Gordon, Howlin Wolf, Jackie Brenston, Dr Ross, Little Junior Parker, Rufus Thomas, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Billy Lee Riley, Warren Smith, Ray Smith, Hayden Thompson, Barbara Pittman, Carl Mann, Charlie Rich, the Bihari Brothers and BB King for Modern Records.

In the 60s it was Carla Thomas, Mud Boy & The Neutrons (Jim Dickinson), The Box Tops, James Carr, Booker T & The Mgs, The Mar Keys, The Bar Kays, The Memphis Horns, American Studios, Goldwax Studios.

In the 70s it was Isaac Hayes, Stax up to 1974, Big Star. Hi Records and Al Green, Willie Mitchell, Ann Peebles, OV Wright, Syl Johnson etc. There's also Ardent Studios too.

I'm sure there are countless other Southern Soul acts from Memphis, as well as rockabilly, and blues.

Secondly, what about Muscle Shoals in Alabama: home of Arthur Alexander, Dan Penn originally, Spooner Oldham, Eddie Hinton, Clarence Carter, Duane Allman with Wilson Pickett on Hey Jude, Candi Staton, and where Bob Dylan cut Slow Train Coming.

Memphis
Nashville
St. Louis
Kansas City
New Orleans
Chicago

C'mon Max what touring band is going to skip San Francisco, Portland and seattle? And throw in a Vancouver for our neighbors to the North, although border crossings are always a bitch. I have stories of customs agents taking apart racks of gear, then even opening up individual pieces of gear, causing the tour manager and engineers much grief.

And the inside joke is that there is always someone in the band wanted in Texas. Gotta skip Texas, if it weren't for Austin they would be hurtin'. Not much has changed in some Cities down there since 1975. lol

TomCasagrande , MCats says Memphis ain't waht it used to be. And if we go back to the 50's and 60's it's another world for most of the action. Today New York City, New Orleans and Nashville trump all the rest. peace

What is a "San Francisco, Portland and seattle"?... or for that matter what the hell is a "Columbia"?

winking smiley JK.....

The sometimes skip the upper coast cities depending on the tour,
but the LA area is a sure thing, it is "the entetainment capital of the
world" including all the bad and good things that goes along with that.

Well Max since you asked, Columbia MO, Home of The famous venue 'The Blue Note' , College town USA. Three Universities in one town. U of Missouri - Columbia, Columbia College and Steven's College (girls finishing school). More college age show goers in that town than most. It's on most of the good tour stops, great venue. Rich the owner is fine fellow and treat the bands super well, good reputation.

If a band is going to play LA they most ALWAYs go up the coast to SF, Portland and Seattle. The west coast is the cutting board for touring bands and some of THE best booking agents are centered here. Like "High Road Touring" run by Frank Riley out of Sausilito. Just check out his web site if you want to see the enormous number of acts he is booking these days. peace

"If you can make it in New York, You can make it anywhere."

NYC followed by New Orleans and deep historic apprecation of music. Many a musical soulmate to be found in New Orleans.

New Orleans.

Chicago has rules about a band can't play more than one gig a month anywhere else in the city limits, which makes it not even on the list of places to play/see music for me.
