This actor looks like a great pick as Jagger...and as I suggested in another thread, perhaps Russel Brand might be an OK choice for Keith. The film would have to better than the book...I think...I hope...I pray.smoking smiley

Amazon review of Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones

Massive Disappointment, August 15, 2008
1 star
By Mark Hayward
I was excited to discover this, as like several others, I thought his previous Stones book was
fantastic. But in the intervening years the author has become insufferably pompous,
egotistical and cliché-ridden. He also appears to have fired his editor.

The author's habit of continually inserting song titles/lyrics and even bits of Shakespeare
(without quotation marks, just to prove how effortless it all is) is as annoying as
listening to some teenager say "like" every other word. For example: "Clowns to the left of
him, jokers to the right, there he is, stuck in the middle with Keith", and as for the last
line in the book, it deserves throwing against a wall. The constant uses of "Philip Michael Jagger"
and also of the present tense are both increasingly irritating to the point of distraction.
And the bit where he breaks off to slag off other Stones book authors is hilariously
crass and at the same time pahetic.

Please allow me to quote a paragraph as a perfect illustration of the author's style;
if you can get to the end of it without choking, this book is for you!

"Before any of this happens, Keith and Anita pull a Houdini. No pun intended,
they take a powder. Like Bonnie & Clyde, they go on the lam. They skedaddle.
They do the cow-cow boogie out the big front door of Nellcote...and then head
as fast as they can for the airport in Nice where they board a plane and fly to
safety. Like Elvis, Keith and Anita have now left the building. They have flown
the coop."

Hey, Greenfield, you forgot "They are ex-residents, they have ceased to be..."

yeah, i get that greenfield's style is obnoxious (like mine).

but i've yet to hear one word about how he's wrong about what a mess things
were at nellcote.

it seems to me he's writing like a druggie about some very drugged-out times.
which while not the only way to approach the subject is certainly a legit one.

I am looking forward to re-reading it under the trees this summer in the south of France, Exile cd playing, and my laptop opened to some of Dominique Tarlé's timeless photos.

Heading to Villefranche-Sur-Mer too? I´m renting an place there this July. Would be great to meet some of you if you´re going there.

Won't they need permission to use the songs ? That'll be an interesting negotiation.

I met Dominique Tarlé briefly one or two years ago during a photo signing.
I asked him what he thought about the book.
He told me that the book fulled of mistakes and bad vibes ...
Clearly not was not what he saw there.

And he seemed to be not very happy about my question ...

I will be in Languedoc-Roussillon, just outside of Béziers through the summer. Are you really staying in Villefranche-sur-Mer?

Oh, haven´t been in Beziers. Supposedly beautiful! Yes, I´m staying in Villefranchesmiling smiley I´ve only done daytrips previous years, including the "40th anniversary" last spring, but figured I had to stay there longer this year. Soak up the atmosphere.

A lot of sucking and jerking off, to be precise. Kinda like Keith's "strawberries and blueberries!"

I just read almost a hundred pages at Amazon. A good read. Can't wait til
I get ahold of my own copy this summer, and see how things turn out.

Make or break on this movie is obviously whether they have the rights to
use the music. My guess is yes. First of all, most of the tunes could be
had cheap. No demand for them. And secondly, I don't think Branson would
be investing without having secured the rights to enough of Exile's music.

I doubt the film makers will be foolish enough to try to portray much of
the basement music making. That will be left to the imagination, just as
it was to most of Nellcote's inhabitants and visitors. But the actual
music is needed to carry the scandalous dramatic action, no doubt about that.

Personally, I really like the idea of using as much non-vocal Exile music as
possible, both released stuff with the vocals removed, and unreleased
unfinished instrumental things.

i love it too, but Title 5 is from the Satanic sessions.
how it got onto the Exile bonus release is a mystery. or an obscure inside joke. or a secret.
anyway i vote for more tracks without the film

(Priest or Mystic, 19th century, Bali)

in my gallery, i've turned a hundred different idols from a hundred different
disappeared cultures in favor of this project, so you're hopelessly
outgunned, sssoul

seriously, is your opposition a) that "season in hell" is wrong, b) that
"season in hell" is correct but focuses too narrowly on negative things, or
c) that "season in hell" is correct but this part of the history should
not be publicized?

you realize, of course, that Jagger is almost certainly a silent partner in
this project?

and why do i need to defend my conviction that this "idea" is Just Wrong??
you're just defending it to be contrary. have some popcorn :E

my chain of logic (speculation) goes like this: a) Branson would not do
this project without the music rights b) Jagger pays too close attention
to ever allow Exile music to slip into undesired hands c) Keith does not
pay sufficient attention to such details d) so it all fits in quite well
with Mick's current campaign to somewhat de-mythologize or at least
de-idealize the Stones. So he can move onto other things.

Dear Sssoul, in intellectual intercourse it is considered inadequate to
simply stomp one's foot in protest. It is not that you are being attacked
and need to defend yourself. Rather, there is a somewhat kindred spirit
who seeks to understand the nature of your discomfort with this project,
so that he can reassure you that nothing, and certainly not this
movie, can ever undermine the immortality of Exile music. In fact, my hunch
is, especially if Jagger is secretly involved, that the magic of the music
will actually be enhanced by a more thorough understanding of its tawdry
foundations.

Re: "A Season in Hell" to be made into Hollywood drama!

but but but who said it's the immortality of the music and/or its tawdry foundations that i'm fretting about?!
both of those are forever, far beyond any movie's poor power to add or detract.

it's just: why make a "biopic" (which is about the most irritating genre i can think of anyway)
on the basis of a grubby-spirited factual-error-ridden cash-in by someone who over the years
has exhibited barely any affinity for the Stones or their music, whines, and doesn't know what "sibilant" means??
there are excellent books by people who can really write to base a film on, if someone feels they have to make films.

go on being contrary, i know you enjoy that no end - but my incense is still hotter than your idols :E

I don't know what "sibilant" means either. Sssomething to do with the sound
of a word I think...

"Grubby-spirited". Hmm. Now we're getting somewhere, you and me.

So I will grant you "grubby-spirited" and "factual errors" and "tabloid
style" all, just because I'm more interested in the sex and drugs and
am really glad that someone has made an attempt to piece together that
part of the story. If I get my wish, and get to see all that nasty stuff
coupled with all that nasty music, then I'm sure you'll agree, "no harm done".

Especially since you'll still get to hear the soundtrack without having to
be exposed to anyone else's sub-par visuals or dialogue.

If the movie is half as hot and exciting as the music,
then the facts can ride in the backseat for all I care.

Speaking of which, the hell with Mick and Keith,
who's gonna play Anita?

Hey, we got ourselves a deal!

If the movie is hot and exciting and the vibe, if not every fact,
is in tune with the music, then you agree to love it.

And if its not, I agree to hate it.

What a pair, what a team.
