I personally can't nominate an album that is 3/4 covers (only 3 original songs) for "Best" in any category, except for maybe "Best Cover/Tribute Album". Don't get me wrong, it sounds great and I like to spin it, but to me it's a cover band that has yet to find its voice yet.

I don't care for Please Please Me. I don't feel like The Beatles had found their voice yet either, even though it's all original tunes.

It is a great debut album.

When you think of it, The Stones debut album is head and shoulders above Please Please Me, and Bob Dylan's first album.

In that category (of giants) that is probably true. The Stones probably hit closer to the nature of music they would be later best known (even though they drift rather far from it 66-67).

But I think what is interesting in these pioneer albums made by THE artists that would lead the whole sixties musical scene BIG TIME (and probaly have nothing equal to them born ever since) all those albums are just shooting into darkness. None of them knew what they actually were doing, no any bigger visions - Dylan put there his best folk songs from his Greenwich days, The Stones their Richmond repertuare and Beatles theirs; Beatles have more 'original' songs than the others (Dylan had what: two?). No one of them actully understood the artistic importance of an album (the whole concept didn't maean anything special yet in the day of the singles) - they were just happy to have the oppurtunity to record a whole album. That's an professional achievenment of its own in music business. But when acts like the Doors, Hendrix, Zeppelin etc would make their (wonderful) debuts some years later they knew what they were doing, the path was already there to follow, and the whole concept of album was quite defined by then.

In this way, I think all of those debuts albums by The Beatles, The Stones and Dylan are simply brilliant and unique. Each of them is so fresh, natural, innocent, raw, instinct - and now in hindsight showing the huge potentia the acts have.

I hadn't considered 'Are You Experienced', but that's incredibly good, kicking rock into a new stratosphere. But, Led Zeppelin I is the one for me. I always looked at their recording career as an inverted pyramid, with the best work coming first, and then declining. For me personally, Led Zeppelin IS the Summer of '69. I can still hear the smoky guitar of 'You Shook Me' and see that Atlantic Records logo spinning around. Both sides were pure genius.

For me also LED ZEPPELIN I marks their best stuff. I think there they simply hit the target by playing the hardest rhythm and blues ever done and not having too much 'artistic' bullshitting and yip yap that would spoil their later works for me. I would even claim that Zeppelin's debut is best 'hard rock' album ever done - and actually one of the very rare ones I actually like from that genre). "Good Times and Times" is my favourite individual Zeppelin number as well (so it's all downhill from theregrinning smiley)

But Jimi's debut album is something I think never will be topped. Yeah, another atmosphere altogether - and a huge step there. What always amazes is that he was an incredible song writer. The album is full of damn great songs. Actually almost each song is musically perfect, and full of brilliant, novel ideas. And not just the guitar (it is sad that people only tend to think Hendrix as an inventive guitar player - he was much more!). If I'd been around in 1967 I would have thrown SGT. PEPPER out of window after hearing this. Well, I guess some people actually did that then... I also saddens me to think that how far and deep in the pop mud The Stones were at the time... I mean who on earth would listen BETWEEN THE BUTTONS after this?

Meanwhile the Rolling Stones' first album is very good, I surely wouldn't say it's comparable with the albums that followed, nor with other people's debut albums

I think the best debut album of all time is Jimi's Are You Experienced

....but in addition to some of the albums mentioned here; personal favourites are

JJ Cale......Naturally
Iggy Pop's first album; The Idiot
Rod Stewart's first.....Every Picture Tells A Story
The Band.....Music from Big Pink
Derek & The Dominos; Layla & other assorted love songs

Actually, Rod had released a couple of other albums before EPTAS - An Old Raincoat, etc (with that cool version of Street Fighting Man). EPTAS wqs the first well known one though. And a mighty fine album.

I realize this is a Stones forum and to some, anything the Stones have done they will think is the best. But best debut album ever? Give me a break!

I agree. Certainly a great album but not the best debut album ever. Amazon had an article that ranked it as the 25th best debut album of all time. Unlike a lot of bands that have a great debut album then have a steady decline The Stones got better as the sixties went on and they started to write more of their own songs.

"Lyin' awake in a cold, cold sweat. Am I overdrawn, am I going in debt?
It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

Released in the UK as "An Old Raincoat Won´t Ever Let You Down" and in the US as "The Rod Stewart Album".

Quite an impressive line of albums before the decline:

1969 An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down
1970 Gasoline Alley
1971 Every Picture Tells A Story
1972 Never a Dull Moment
1974 Smiler

Also, the Stones had the greatest debut single of all time, "Come On" is a classic and beats anything ever done by the Beatles or Bob Dylan! Led Zeppelin or the Doors don't rate.

Thanks for all your alternative "best evers".

Some really good ones.

If I had to choose from them all it would still be "The Rolling Stones".

It's my thread so I declare it the winner.

The Cars first album is loaded with songs that were played on the radio...

That's a good one. Even when it was brand new, it sounded like a greatest hits album.

Best debut is the Stones? Meh.

Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Hendrix, Johnny Thunders (essentially a Punk Stones album - with more swagger), Van Halen...and on and on...

I always saw the Stones debut as just a really good Garage Rock record.

One that is failing to get mentioned is the Whos Debut My Generation. The British version released in December 1965 has EIGHT original numbers and just three covers. For a debut album, and for a pop album in 1965, that is astounding. Note that the Beatles had only released two albums of original material at the time (A Hard Days Night, and the recently released Rubber Soul) while the Stones had yet to release an album of original material. Besides the Who, only the Kinks had the balls to release an album of almost all original material (Kinda Kinks and Kinks Kontroversy both contained 1 cover a piece).
What of the material? Well its punk ten years before punk. All of the tracks have a sort of snear to them. The Good's Gone is one of the most underated and forgotten early Who tracks, using a droning sound throughout and a bit of fuzz here and there. Out in the Street is a great opener that, much like Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, encaspulates a 1965 Who Concert: manic drumming a breakdown in the middle. It's Not True and Legal Matter (the latter with a hook said to be inspired by The Last Time) show Pete Townshend's tongue in cheek writing found later on songs like Pictures of Lily or even later Squeeze Box, is already developed. The Kids Are Alright sounds like a song the Beatles could have done if they'd been allowed to cut loose. The title track speaks for itself. The only real weak songs are the covers, two James Brown numbers and the Bo Diddley standard 'I'm A Man". However even in the latter, the Who shows a bit of a jazzy side in the instrumental break. Finally there is hard rock surf instrumental "The Ox", that shows why the Who's rhythm section would be second to none over the next ten years.

I personally concur with THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO.

THE ROLLING STONES would be in my top 10. I just re-listened to PLEASE PLEASE ME for the first time in many years; it's fine but not outstanding.

Great post. By '67-'68 bands had 5 years of rock albums to listen to and take experience from.

Surprised this one hasn't been mentioned yet..

That one or Marquee Moon for me

Perhaps best debut album of 1964? I agree that other debut albums are better - original songs, breaking new ground, etc. But most are post-1967, so the trail had already been blazed.

Some contenders - Big Brother and the Holding Company; Jefferson Airplane; Jethro Tull; Pearls Before Swine, Cream, Traffic.

Also, the Stones had the greatest debut single of all time, "Come On" is a classic and beats anything ever done by the Beatles or Bob Dylan! Led Zeppelin or the Doors don't rate.

That's because You Really Got Me was Van Halen's first single, but it was NOT the Kinks first single. It was their third. The first Kinks single was a cover of Long Tall Sally. It flopped. So did the second one. I think it's a pretty good list. I'm surprised the Who's "I Can't Explain" isn't on it, but that might be because they're considering the High Numbers "I'm The Face" to be the first Who single.

The Rolling Stones no. 1 is great and is actually the Stones' biggest chart success ever, spending 12 weeks at number 1 in the UK. I'm not going to argue about which one is the best ever (sure Hendrix and Doors are great too!), but for me there is not one dull second on this record.

Another pretty good debut that has not been mentioned here is The Angry Young Them (UK version far superior to US), which contains 6 Morrison originals and 8 covers.

Manfred Mann`s debut, "The Five Faces of Mann"; - more polished, better musicians.
