I hear a lot of "Lady Jane" influence in this 1966 Everly Brothers song...produced by Dave Hassinger!

I would even say that the Stones were more successful than the Beatles in creating an aural past era without being campy. Another example is 'Backstreet Girl'.

... really?

To my particular ears, really. Eleanor Rigby sounds very modern. Lady Jane & Backstreet Girl sound are very acoustic and sound like they could have been performed in other centuries by minstrels of the day. I'm transported to another age with those songs. Eleanor Rigby's subject is loneliness in the modern world. To my ears.

I'll be! I think I understand what you mean now.
Cheers

^ Wow! That's beautiful!

As for Lady Jane, it's perfect! Lets not forget Charlie's contribution on, I think, glockenspiel.

This song let the world know that the Stones could turn their heads to a wider musical canvass and compete with The Beatles. A great song.

It's a pity this jewel did not make it on the 40 Licks compilation. I never understood why.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Miming, of course, but nice video featuring Brian and the dulcimer, and a great deadpan performance from Mick. Poor Charlie doesn't know quite what to do - he's in the studio but not on the track...

An absolutely piece of art. Brain and Keith at their best . Simple and beautiful

I favor the so called "live" version from "got live if you want it", because of the drum-track on this one ... actually an overdub, the drums, isnĀ“t it?

Yes - glockenspiel, did somebody say? Anyway, on this mime session he's left sitting there like a lemon while the rest do their thing.

By the way, is Brian playing the dulcimer with that quill for Elizabethan effect, or is that really how it's done?

Yeah, no question he looks awkward. grinning smiley

The use of a quill is the ye olde traditional way of playing it...

I am not a great fan of Lady Jane, I never listen to it on purpose, but for one reason or the other I just love to play it on guitar and it works great when I have difficulties putting the kids to sleep.

By the way, does anybody know if Keith plays the bass notes of the E/G# and the D/F# with his thumb or in "classical" fingering?

If only Mick had named her Jane:

(More soi-disant than Mick, methinks.)

I adore this song, whatever its meaning. It has got that clever romantic youth factor. Wasn't it about Mick ending his relationship with Chrissie and moving on to Marianne?eye popping smiley

I'm very surprised no-one's posted this gem of a performance up yet. And from not so long ago either. Huge credit to Ronnie here I think.
