Taylor is a great guitarist - but are you sure he dont overplay his cards here - To me Rolling Stones have always been the best - when they dont turn songs into mad guitar solo fest.

Maybe not the best but my fvorite version:

The studio version(without recorded opening "Oooooh" and Clayton vocals), but with live vocals by Mick.

Yeah I prefer the song this way - without Clayton's vocals. I think

Plus, Jaggers live vocal is excellent!

The live versions don't capture all the instruments used in the studio version. Especially the thingmagig (I don't know what instrument is called) that is prevalent throughout the song.

It's actually a hollow gourd called a guirro.
I think it is played by Jimmy Miller on the studio version of Gimme Shelter.

It's ok, sacred cows... I don't like Mick Taylor's soloing.

I have never heard this quality of guitar work from the Stones before or after in live concert. Reminds me of Eric Clapton's Layla. Is this the best or what? Charlie's drumming is really stand out on this.

My problem with 1972-73 versions is that Mick Taylor plays the solo's too fast with no sustain on the notes. Plus I don't like his guitar tone. This song is meant to be played slowerrrrrr. When played fast, it loses its psychedelic feel.
The 1995 version here, is slower and much better than 1972, however it is not perfect, but longer solos would have made it a gem. I think Lisa jumps in too fast to sing her part. Keith and Ronnie mesh really good here.

London 1973, 9-9, another nice one, as said before. Good groove. One of the best versions ever to my taste. I like Taylor's part from 3:57 on.
