Don Cornelius of Soul Train dead at 75

RIP: Don Cornelius, creator and host of the legendary musical variety show Soul Train, was found dead this morning of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound in his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He was 75.

Introducing many Americans to soul music through his hit TV show which premiered in 1971, Cornelius helped promote the careers of such musicals icons as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson.

He is perhaps best remembered, even among non-viewers, for his signature catchphrase, with which he would end each show: ā€œIā€™m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!ā€

He produced a great, great show. James Brown, during a promotional visit to Soul Train, asked Don who REALLY owned the show. Don replied - "I do." Brown - I know you're the front man, but who is the actual owner? A true pioneer.

Sad news, super-cool dude reponsible for giving a lot of exposure to some excellent 70s RnB. Will never forget seeing Bowie on Soul Train.

In homage, I think we need a little Word Scramble (like they used to do on the show):

So sad. Apparently he was dealing with a lot of health issues. Love & light to him and his loved ones.

His name always brings me back to the seventies when my age was one digit.

R.I.P.

Ronnie Wood was on Soul Train in early 1977, accompanying Billy Preston.
Did anyone ever seen this?

Always like Soul Train (and Don) better than Dick Clark and American Bandstand. LOTS better dancing.

Were there any live appearances there? I've never had a desire to get Soul Train DVDs because it always looked like cheesy lip-sinchs to records.

In 1975, when Elton John was the biggest star on the planet, and at the absolute peak of his popularity, Don got him to come on his show.

Yes. The optimism heard in black music (at least in those days), juxtaposed against the reality of black life, is one of the things that made people connect with it on such a deep level.

Most people in America thought the Five Stairsteps was a white group, with a male singing the lead, not a woman. They weren't seen on national tv very often.

After this song, they were barely heard from again. But they do a great job on it.

I can't imagine it being created now in today's' musical environment. Doesn't have enough attitude.

Really? I can sometimes be fooled, but that always sounded like a black woman to me.

On a cheap AM radio, who can really tell? Ooh Ooh Child always was played with this song and the groups may have been confused.

Not me. Not "most people." Probably not even some people.

Just one.

Thank God for Don Cornelius.
