Thanks for posting this, I loved it.

"I don’t care what they say about Aretha,” Billy Preston, who died in 2006, once said. “She can be hiding out in her house in Detroit for years. She can go decades without taking a plane or flying off to Europe. She can cancel half her gigs and infuriate every producer and promoter in the country. She can sing all kinds of jive-ass songs that are beneath her. She can go into her diva act and turn off the world. But on any given night, when that lady sits down at the piano and gets her body and soul all over some righteous song, she’ll scare the shit out of you. And you’ll know—you’ll swear—that she’s still the best @#$%&’ singer this @#$%&-up country has ever produced.”

Great article.

One of the things that saddens me is that Aretha has never recorded a gritty soul album, since Atlantic, like Bettye Lavette, or Candi Staton. Her musical choices from 1975 onwards have been really poor.

She would benefit from a producer who recognizes her natural talent as Rick Rubin did for Johnny Cash, Jack White did for Loretta Lynn or T-Bone Walker has done for Robert Plant.

Solomon Burke, Curtis Mayfield and Pops Staples all made great Soul records late in their careers, why can't the likes of Aretha and Smokey Robinson?

Yes, like at that award show a few months back when she sang "Natural Woman".

You mean T Bone Burnett, but I'm sure we all know.

Joe Henry did a great job with Solomon Burke, Don Was less so. Jeff Tweedy really did great work with Pops Staples, Mavis Staples, and also Ry Cooder too. Aretha has, dare I say it, always had production issues going as far back as the CBS era, wherein good songs were ruined by poor production. Moving on to the I Never Loved A Man sessions, and Ted White ensured only two tracks were cut down in Alabama, due to drink and perceived racial slurs.

I think even Quincy Jones only cut two tracks with Aretha, one cropping up on the Rare & Unissued cd. However, maybe it takes two to tango and Aretha could possibly be a tad difficult. Unlike Mariah Carey and Beyonce, Aretha probably has earned the right to be difficult, but a little flexibility, and she could still create a great album.

On another note, I've heard HB Barnum's production techniques with David Axelrod (an unsung genius is Axelrod) on Little Willie John, and he's an excellent arranger. I think Barnum was also used with Lou Rawls, so he's got top pedigree.

I live in Sarasota, Florida.
She just cancelled a show here due to "lack of band personnel.''

Apx. 10 years ago, I drove through the Smoky Mtn National park in the rain to see her perform at the Harrah's Casino in Cherokee, NC. My wife and I were so excited to see her as she was on both of our "Bucket Lists".

You can imagine our disappointment (I can't describe it here due to the limitations of printed human language) when we got close enough to the marquee to read: "Arethea Franklin ... Cancelled due to illness ... Tonight's Special Guest ... Tony Orlando."

We did not stay for the show.

If she ever comes to Knoxville, and I can get a decent seat, I'll be there. I won't travel to see her again though.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Diana Ross? Soul? Are you sure? A marvelous pop-singer, but, to my ears, is pretty far removed from the genre of soul.

Aretha is the one, true, queen of soul. A wondrous singer; a one-off talent.

My wife and I saw her last year at Nokia Theater and both of us were enthralled by her greatness with the very first notes she sang.
Seriously spine-tingling vibes when she sang all of her classics - doesn't really get any better than that.

Aretha

Soul legend Aretha Franklin is said to be gravely ill and is surronded by friends and family in her native Detroit, according to veteran entertainment reporter Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411.
Franklin, 76, has dealt with numerous health issues in recent years, leading the singer to announce her retirement in February 2017.

We’ve reached out to Franklin’s representatives for more information.

Considered one of the greatest singers in music history, Franklin is the recipient of 18 Grammy Awards and was the first female performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. She is also one of most commercially successful artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide

sad news. 1 of the few artists that I've never seen that I really wanted to. 1 of the best singers ever.

Never saw her in concert, but I was in the crowd at Ford Field in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day 2016 when she performed this epic 4 minute and 35 second version of "The Star-Spangled Banner." That was almost an entire concert all by itself!

My Mama and I are connecting more over this terrible health issue than anything that we've spoken of in years... two phone conversations over 50mins in total, we haven't spoken more than 30sec's in 25years before this

Apparently, she's home with her family around her now, according to her nephew – I read in the paper today.

You're welcome dmay. There are so many incredible rarely heard recordings by Aretha Franklin.I grew up listening to her.In fact she tried her singing Jazz in her early career She actually could touch your soul. THat's why it's called soul music despite the fact she could sing almost anything. A once in a lifetime voice.

I used to love watching TV show “Soul Train” on a Saturday afternoon. This is one of my favourite Aretha tracks.
