GEEZ guys, can't you spot a goof when you see it! Sure I love Mick but he is not in ANYONE'S top ten guitarist list....you thought I was serious hey???? Wow. I do think he's come a long way as a guitarist though. So, why was I the only one t o list Stevie Vai?

Steve Vai did not produce any memorable or important music, as good a guitarist as he might be.

his guitar carried on a conversation with david lee roth as an intro to the tune YANKEE ROSE

you say that like that's a good thing smoking smiley

Also in no special order.

Keith Richards - Duh.
Mick Green - Unknown by 99.999999% of the public. Completely off the radar. Mentioned by Page, Blackmore and Townsend in interviews as a major early influence.
Wilko Johnson - Plays chords by the handful. Completely manic.
Dave 'Kid' Ramos - Great unknown SoCal guitarist. I stand there in awe watching him play.
Hollywood Fats - Also from SoCal. Was mentioned by SRV as his favorite guitar player in an interview.
Neil Young - Uncompromising. Does what he wants and to hell with everyone else attitude.
Jeff Beck - Never a big fan until I saw him at the El Rey in Hollywood. Can't get enough now.
Bill Nelson - Innovative.
SRV - What needs to said.
Rory Gallagher - When he was on, no one could touch him.

Yes Youngie, I am a child of the 60's, a hippie chickie and damn proud of it! And Treacle, so glad you had Mick J on your list too; I used caps to piss off the Jagger nay-sayers here!! I guess it caught their attention. Mission Accomplished!winking smiley Yup, I made sure he stood out, but as someone said in earnest, Mick can be considered a damn good guitar player, but realistically, even I know he's no Jimi. Mick wouldn't mind us being reasitic when assessing his abilities. I agree that Vai is a bit much at times, didn't know any of that crap about Zappa. He is indeed like Satriani, who is a great player but I know he does play a few too many notes. Most times, being tasty can also be about being economonical.

I beg to differ about Steve Vai here:

He has the balls just like Richards, the feeling just like Jeff Beck, he plays the guitar with the sensitivity and intonation of an India Vina-player, played a lot with Frank Zappa - which is quite significant music, and technically rather good.
He influenced lots of young guitarists. In other words: he explores the guitar in his own way. Besides he is a broad-minded personality and rather modest.

That's the reason why some people don't like him. Please get the wax out of your fossilized ears, at least just for one song.

is that like playing fewer notes while wearing a single, corrective lens?

Of course Vai is a good player, even better than his teacher Satriani. However, people's aquired taste is different - and when you have problems with the guitarist's style and taste - there's bound to arise a problem, no matter how technically good he is or how inventive he was. Well, he invented the seventh string, right? winking smiley

James Blood Ulmer (one of my favorite players)
Jimi Hendrix (listening to Band of Gypsies the other day..)
Richard Lloyd ( insane performer w/ Television, and solo)
Sonny Sharrock
Bill Nelson (never still)
John Frusciant (can't believe he has not been mentioned yet)
Steve Jones (iron right hand on Sex Pistols)
Kevin Shields ( huge; it's what Edge could be with bigger balls)
Marc Ribot (all the Tom Waits albums)
James Burton (the Paisley Tele- it's no gay guitar)
Marc Bolan ( way underrated as a pure guitarist; esp. on electric)
Mick Ronson (more and more folks realizing his production and arranging skills)

I got to mention a few more: Mick Jones (Clash), Dave Navarro, Jimmy 'Chank' Nolen, Mike Campbell (Tom Petty), last but no least - Jeff Beck.

Marc Ribot also cuts the mustard on Soul Alive by Solomon Burke, one of the greatest live albums. I love his work with the Prosthetic Cubans too. He also appeared on Buddy Miller's Six Silver Strings album with Bill Frisell and others.

Ok, so it may be cheating, but the banjo is very, very similar to a guitar. Thus, can we include Bela Fleck ??

Right of course, and from a musical point of view it's better to add one than to remove one.. cool smiley
