What people? Classical music accounts for only minuscule percentage of total record sales, just as in another couple hundred years, rock music will account for only a minuscule percentage of total record sales. Actually, that's already beginning to happen.

The only person still talking about those people is the person who compiled the list. There will always a few people who devote their lives to things nobody else cares about. That's what historians do.

Loads of oldies and appreciaters of classical music. It's not just about "sales".
As for rock music being a minuscule % of total record sales - isn't all music being downloaded now?

People will barely be talking about these bands in fifty years.
They will talk about them only for as long as they still exist within living memory. In about 100 years from now, the last living person who saw the Rolling Stones will die. After that, there will be no more talk.

If you PAY for a download, it counts as a record SALE.

And if you don't pay?

I think in 500 years that people will be very much aware of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Nobody will talk about Van Halen.
Name some musicians, popular in the year 1512, that people still talk about today.

THE STONES ARE THE BEST ~ NO BAND WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO THEM
in 500 years this will have the status of mythology - moving and inspiring mythology -
and we are the incredibly fortunate witnesses
in the evenings and in the mornings,
when we set out on our journeys and when we return home,
we shall speak of them
i love the Rolling Stones
In 500 years, no one will be aware that there ever was a band called the Rolling Stones. I can understand wanting to believe that we have spent our lifetimes obsessing about something that "matters", but matters to whom? And in what context? Truth is, we've "wasted" our lives caring very deeply about something that matters not one iota. And I think it's okay to admit that, and embrace it.
i pride myself on a life of complete and utter waste. and i congratulate everyone on this board for this noble achievement.

I guarantee in 500 years people will still be talking about the damn Pink Floyd and Dark Side of the Moon
as i understand it at some point in the future you ain't gonna need to tell the truth or tell no lies...everything you think, do, and say is in the pill you took today

People will have a case by saying you shouldn't be paying for music period.
That no real excuse for guys downloading music illegally but it happens. New CD prices have always been too expensive.
Anyway we're kind of going off topic here.
The Stones will always be remembered - maybe not always for good reasons

Which comes back to my original point: is it right to charge for music? I'm sure the Ancient Greek musicians didn't charge someone to listen to them playing the flute.

So you're saying musicians don't deserve to be paid for their work???

True. It's not work living the Rock 'n' Roll lifestyle. It's fun.
Nowadays there's copyright on everything. You can hardly whistle a tune in public without being sued.
