Just saw a teaser commercial for the new Mercedes Benz, and it used Sympathy For The Devil.
Yeas they were palying that a lot during the football games. I guess the old boys needed a few more quid. eye rolling smiley

Who owns the rights to Sympathy? If it's ABKO maybe the Stones don't get a say.

The only untainted band i can think of is our great friends The Beatles.

Maybe while they were together, but Revolution has been used to sell Nike sneakers.

Didn't think of that. You might be right.

Yoko's to blame. George Harrison said Nike was planning to record a REVOLUTION cover with Julian Lennon doing the vocal. But [George's words in paraphrase], "Because Yoko doesn't like Julian, she gave Nike the Beatles' REVOLUTION."

From the book BEATLES FOR SALE by John Blaney:

"Nike licensed the song from ATV, but rather than use a cover version it recieved permission from Yoko Ono to use the Beatles' recording. As a member of the Apple board, Ono should have consulted the other Beatles before giving permission for their recording to be used. Likewise, Capitol should have checked with Apple before issuing a license. Apple sued Capitol and Nike for £15 million, but it didn't make a lot of difference. Nike continued to use the Beatles' recording while waiting for the case to go to court. When the case did reach the courts, Apple, EMI and Capitol agreed that in future no Beatles recordings would be used in commercial advertising."

The Doors. They nearly caved in to Buick in 1968, however....

The Buick Incident
John Densmore recalls that Buick offered $75,000 in October 1968 to adapt the song for use in a Buick Opel TV commercial ["Come on, Buick, light my fire"]. Morrison, however, was still in London after a European tour had just ended on September 20 and could not be reached by the other group members, who agreed to the deal in his absence. As the band had agreed in 1965 to both equal splits and everyone having veto power in decisions, Morrison consequently called Buick and threatened to smash an Opel with a sledgehammer on television should the (presumably ready) commercial be aired. Source: Wikipedia page on Light My Fire

So, to this day, Doors music remains "untainted" by commercial advertising.

Anyone got a copy of the Charlie Watts "Satisfaction" print ad - for drumsticks, maybe?

It hangs in a local bar and the owner won't let me have it.
