Today on ARTE TV: Beware of Mr.Baker

When I watched the Eric Clapton documentary recently, I was instantly reminded of the fact, that Ginger Baker is one of the best drummers in rock history.
And I'm not willing to discuss this, he's one of the greatest!
He may not be a great human being, though.

You can draw your own conclusions, the obove mentioned documentary is shown tonight on ARTE TV:

Streaming:

A bit of Stones content is in there too, if I remember it correctly.

Just watched it for the first time a couple weeks ago after the Eric one. Loved it. Here's what I posted in the Eric thread:

Also, highly recommend the Beware Of Mr. Baker doc about Ginger. Had never seen it and IMO that was way better than the new Eric one. Its way more interesting and engaging as opposed to pedestrian IMO, which is shocking for a guy who is basically know for Cream and one Blind Faith album. It should be a 20 minute doc. But it was incredibly fascinating, in no small part because Ginger is @#$%& crazy and a loon.

Yes...a very interesting film. Of course, Ginger fell out with the Director.
But then he has fallen out with just about everybody, it seems.
Only the music business could put up with him!

Interesting to watch.
Reminded me what a great drummer he really was/is.And got his very own style.

I remember Buddy Rich (maybe the greatest) watched him live at one of those drum battles in early 70s and thought he was a joke.
As a drummer myself still thinking about that comment.

Buddy didn't think much of rock 'n roll or country music so even Charlie Watts would have got the thumbs down. Like Baker, he had a short fuse and apparantly Dusty Springfield (another prima donna) once punched him in the face because of his obnoxious behaviour.

Is Ginger Baker's life a nightmare - or is Ginger Baker the nightmare?

We all knew what a nightmare Ginger often was to his band fellows and for other people.
But the great drummer Buddy Rich was he was everything else than a good guy
and I never heard or read from Mr. Rich saying anything good about other drummers.
Well, probably I just missed it.

You would NEVER hear Buddy Rich say one complimentary thing about a rock'n'roll drummer, no matter how talented.

This is a great example of how set in his ways he is. Far be it for me to criticize Buddy, but he doesn't articulate why a matched grip is unsuitable for a drum kit. He just KNOWS it is and won't allow for adaptation or even let the idea that it is suitable enter his head.

Watched the Ginger Baker doc a couple of years ago. I thought he came across as a total prick! I'm surprised he allowed it to be released.

He probably needs the money.
