OT: Jimmy Cliff

Hello,

just to ask the people in the list wich are your thoughts about Jimmy Cliff.

In my case I realy like his music a lot. I dont like reggae too much just a couple of things, but I like Jimmy Cliff music a lot, may be becouse he is not a 100 % a reggae musician, his blend of soul and raggae makes his music a little different from what you consider a pure reggae musician.

Also I see that his discography is very mistreated, the only thing you get are "best of" instead of the originals albums. Dont know why can this happen with such and artist.

Saw him live many years ago and have the chance to shake hands with him after the concert, seems to be a humble and shy person.

Thanks for your comments.
Fernando

I'm not as into him as I should be...pure laziness on my part.

The Harder They Come soundtrack is one of the best motion picture soundtracks ever, and one of my favourite albums ever.

Such a great artist. My favorites are: The Harder They Come, Sitting In Limbo and Struggling Man.

I don't know his music very well, except for this song "The Harder They Come" which indeed is great. And that film it came from, which was full of great music, from especially Toots & The Maytals.

Amazingly he still can sing in that high voice!

Saw his house in the 'Beverly Hills' neighborhood of Kingston Jamaica, he's done quite nicely for himself!

Always seemed to be a bit of a reggae outsider, I don't think he ever completely subscribed to the Rastafarian religion.

Jimmy Cliff did one of the best Reggae Concerts, that I've ever seen in my life. I saw him in the early 90s.

Fabulous artist--- his influence cannot be ignored--- The Harder They Come soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks EVER... and stands up over the years--- his tracks on that album influenced everyone from Keith to McCartney to Lennon and set the stage for artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and the whole Reggae explosion in the 70's
Had a chance to see him in 1977 and he was great--- don't know what he's up to these days, but boy, was he good !

Fantastic. He should be spoken of in the same way as Marley. Bought my first Jimmy Cliff record - wonderful world, beautiful people - around 1970. His most recent album is very good

I saw Cliff and his band at the Roxy in West Hollywood in the late '70's. When the question of best or favorite concert comes up I always think of that show. The sound was incredible. Each song started with a reggae rhythm beat and ended up sounding like a symphony. You could hear each instrument perfectly. In the audience sitting at the next table was Ronnie and Jo. Ian Dury opened the show and after his set Ronnie disappeared back stage presumably to visit with Dury. He (Ronnie) looked like he was having a good time.

I saw him at the Paradiso Theater, Amsterdam in 2004 and it's up there with the best shows I've ever experienced by anyone.
His latest album- Rebirth from 2012, is great. It won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, and was included in Rolling Stone's '50 Best Albums of 2012'.

JIMMY CLIFF - One More

"I got one more shot at the prize
So don't be surprised
Open your eyes
I got one more shot at the goal
Straight from my soul
And I'm in control.."

REBIRTH

"I got one more arrow in my bow
And as I let it go
Just watch my flow
I got one more arrow in my bow
To the target and it's a hit..."

Agree though I think the reggae purists hold back due to his various religion changes and not dedicating himself as 100% Rastafarian.

Then again even Marley converted to Episcopalian near the end of his life.

I first became familiar with Jimmy Cliff through his In Concert album from 1976, which was produced by ALO. It includes a great cover of Cat Steven's "Wild World". "Struggling Man" is another favorite of mine.

I associate this album with Love you Live, not only because they were recorded the same year but I also first heard both of them right around the same time and to me they both have a similar funky sound and feel to them.
