Jigsaw Puzzle has killer lyrics
Posted by: Send It To me ()

that is all.

There's a tramp sittin' on my doorstep
Tryin' to waste his time
With his methylated sandwich
He's a walking clothesline
And here comes the bishop's daughter
On the other side
She looks a trifle jealous
She's been an outcast all her life

Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do my jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore

Oh the gangster looks so fright'ning
With his luger in his hand
But when he gets home to his children
He's a family man
But when it comes to the nitty-gritty
He can shove in his knife
Yes he really looks quite religious
He's been an outlaw all his life

Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore

Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore

Oh the singer, he looks angry
At being thrown to the lions
And the bass player, he looks nervous
About the girls outside
And the drummer, he's so shattered
Trying to keep on time
And the guitar players look damaged
They've been outcasts all thier lives

Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore

Oh, there's twenty-thousand grandmas
Wave their hankies in the air
All burning up their pensions
And shouting, "It's not fair!"
There's a regiment of soldiers
Standing looking on
And the queen is bravely shouting,
"What the hell is going on?"

With a blood-curdling "tally-ho"
She charged into the ranks
And blessed all those grandmas who
With their dying breaths screamed, "Thanks!"

Me, I'm just waiting so patiently
With my woman on the floor
We're just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore

I never before now knew Mick was singing "methylated." Thanks.

always have loved this song from the very 1st time I heard it. Love the bit too about how Mick describes 'the band'...
----------------------

"Doctor please, some more men please,
To Cotchford Farm, out by the pool...

What a drag it is they couldn't revive him"

I think that Mick was trying to write Desolation Row.

one of the best songs the band ever made, i have always felt it would have been the perfect song to finish "stones in the park with" if only they could have played it live.

He was certainly in his Dylan "Blonde on Blonde" phase lyrically, but he did a nice job.

not just lyrically...vocally, too...probably his most dylanesque vocal

The verse about the band is nice. The rest I thought was an awful Dylan parody.

not really a parody, but neither is it pure homage. just like with the stones'
beatlish things, they are honoring their serious competition but also critiquing
them at the same time...

in this case, the slam against dylan is pretty clear: his tendency to write
word-puzzle songs for poetry-majors and professors.

nonetheless, mick still liked bob's work enough to do probably an album's
worth of it (and a great album at that): sympathy, can't always get what
you want, jigsaw puzzle, who's driving your plane, memo from turner all come to mind immediately...

even think "she saw me coming" was done sorta like "rainy day women" at a time
when the stones were trying to rope in dylan as opening act for their
Bang NYC shows (which Scorcese wanted too because of the release of his dylan
documentary). stones even went so far as to rehearse "rainy day women".

remember that? first they wanted dylan bad. then they tried hard for bruce,
mick wine-ing and dining him. but all they wound up with was alannis morrisette.

they offered bob and bruce co-headliner status, like they did with metallica
in S.F., but neither one bit.

Awful song. The worst song the Stones did from 68-72. Make that 68-86.

In your opinion, what would be the best song? What would be the 2nd worse song? In the years you mentioned.

To get the alcohol Alco's often consume anything from
metho (metholated sandwich) to boot-polish by dipping it in bread .... I kid you not

Or check-out Tommy Johnson and his love for Sterno an alcohol based
fire-lighter that he sang about in his famous Canned Heat Blues

I liked Mick's fake Dylan voice a lot better than whatever fake voice he's been using lately.

Hi Bingo, I am pretty sure it was Keith, a lot of people thought it was Brian because it is a bit shaky, as Brian may have been by then ('68 ), but I believe Keith has mentioned that it was himself. I would have to dig a bit to find this quote, however. Brian, I believe did play the mellotron at the end of this song.

Keith's on slide. Brian's on Mellotron.
The weird thing about this song for me was he uses the word "outcasts" twice, and in between he uses "outlaw." It always threw me. Kind of like Hey Jude where McCartney uses the word "shoulder" twice. Didn't I just hear that word?
