^ I never took the "England's Newest Hitmakers" as "true" album title ... more something like Decca came up with after the album was fully assembled. That album is simply titled "The Rolling Stones" in my book.

I'm not sure I think "A Bigger Bang" is their best titel, but it is one of them. It is both moddest (the "a" ) and shamelessly bragging, refined and vulgar - making The Big Bang human (and one of many). Of course it is just a guuss, but the titel could be inspired by Courbet's Origin of the world, which was covered by a both hinting and hiding painting. As one can experience on the Lacan-homepage (Jacques Lacan - psychoanalyst and previous owner of Courbets erotic masterpiece).

uh...what?

It was Courbets erotic masterpiece you douche...don't you get it?

What were we talking about again?

Oh yeah, I think Sticky Fingers is the best. Worst has to be Bridges to Babylon...what the hell does that even mean, or have any relation to the music on the album?

Hmmm, relationship to the music on the album? well, the album had a lot to
do with self-defeating behavior. And a primary example of that, in mick's view,
was the push for war in iraq (babylon). it was a way of calling bullshit on clinton's
slogan "bridge to the 21st century". no, mick was saying, more like a bridge
to babylon, in the rasta sense too.

so its also one of a number of stones titles that are also retorts. "satanic
majesties" name and cover art are a retort to "sgt pepper's". "let it bleed"
a retort to "let it be" (yes, "bleed" was released before "be" but "be" was
already well known and well heard by mick).

although "a bigger bang" struck everybody as corny sounding, in the end it
has quite a few things going for it. because the term was coined by the US
Defense secretary in 1954 to refer to nuclear weapons, it is a retort to
"how to dismantle an atomic bomb". it also served to raise the ticket-selling
issue "have they chosen to go out with a bang?". plus it was self-referential
to a different title of theirs that also came out at the start of a difficult
period in political history...

Beggar Banks/A Bigger Banquet

Crack, smack and a bottle of Jack.

Re: Best album TITLES

Flowers is an odd choice for a Stones album, even back then.
I do not like Voodoo Lounge, and Steel Wheels. They smack too much of corporate brainstorming session; "we need a two word title that sounds cool, and that we can name and model a tour after".
I love all the older titles like "Now!" and "Out of our Heads" , "Hitmakers" - love them.
Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goats Head Soup - all brilliant. As I scroll through them in my head I realize that the Stones have had GREAT titles; it's the artwork that is sketchy.

everybody understandably loves that word Exile, but at least when it came out,
still probably, there's been less love towards the Main Street part. nodody
calls the album Main Street that's for sure. yeah, know about the location of
the LA studios on main street, but "main street" the phrase has strong connotations
of its own, most of them quite in contradiction to what the stones symbolized at
that time. "main street" is pretty much the opposite of the word "exile"
actually.

a good question then is why "main street" and not desolation row or something like that?

and the answer is that Mick was setting up the meme that the Stones were
not diabolical any longer, but simply main street entertainment. and it was
successful marketing. with his mostly white elvis jumpsuits, mick was saying,
nothing to be scared of, we're just hardworking vegas-type entertainers.

and the press bought it, both mainstream and alternative, the latter screaming
that the stones had sold out. which they had. they'd intentionally gone vegas
to put 1969 and altamont behind them.

This contradiction is exactly what makes the titel so magnificent. The connotations are wider - and the meanings multiple.
